If Lewis had been up on the scorecards would he not have retired after the V.Klitchko

CRITICS believed that Lewis had escaped from what would have been a very tough ending had the fight carried on and Klitschko not been so badly cut. The defending champion appeared heavy and seemed to tire early during the fight. Klitschko agreed: “I was well prepared. I punch him with every jab. I saw his punches come. He’s a good fighter… he makes a great fight. But I know I would have won.”
EMANUEL STEWARD, Lewis’ trainer, was quoted as saying, “When Lennox goes, I want him to be like Hagler and Marciano and not come back.” Steward got his wish, the win over Klitschko turned out to be Lewis’ final fight in what was an illustrious boxing career.
NEGOTIATIONS for a rematch were in the early stages, but Lewis decided to announce his retirement in February, 2004. Injuries ravaged Klitschko after this battle, but he returned in 2008 after four-year break to complete a 13-fight unbeaten end to his career. He relinquished the WBC title in 2013 so he could focus on politics

I find it hard to beleive he wanted an actual rematch with vitali. Lewis was trying to get a second fight with Tyson after this fight as well, when he would be stripped of his belt for not fighting Vitali who was number one contender,i believe when forced to face Vitali again he hung up his gloves! I find it puzzling why this is not brought up?

If Lewis had been up on the scorecards nobody would even bleat about this fight. The shellacking he took in the early rounds and the fact that he looked like he was going to have a heart attack in his corner in the sixth is what caused the big hoo-ha.

Yes, that would have made it easier for him to retire.

His heart was no longer in it, and he was fighting because he assumed that it was easy money.

After that fight he knew that he was better off out of the game.

If that's the case, which my post clearly proves it wasn't why did Lewis plan on fighting both klitckos before he even fought Tyson?

Lennox Lewis will fight both the Klitschko brothers after his rematch with

and then retire, his trainer Emanuel Steward said yesterday.
Lewis had pulled out of a fight with Vitali Klitschko but Steward told a German website: "Lennox promised me that he'll beat Tyson first, then Vitali and at the end Wladimir. That's the way the plan looks. After these three fights, it's over."

I am old enough to remember all this, so I will tell you how it was.

Nobody realised that the Klitschko’s were a force to be reckoned with, until the Lewis fight.

I remember an interview with a key promoter after the Tyson fight, discussing Lewis’s future options.

“There is a guy called Chris Byrd who he has been accused of ducking. There is a guy called Klitschko (didn’t even say which) who is a Ukraine working out of Germany, that might make a good fight. Apart from that, he is just rounding up the best of a weak crop.

Lewis was badly out of Gas by round 6. He had literally thrown the entire Kitchen sink at Vitali out of desperation but as a result blew all his wad. In the last 90 seconds of the 6th round, while Vitali was holding on for dear life, Lenni was out of gas and had nothing left to finish him off. It would have been an interesting 7th and 8th round but a rematch was definately warranted.

A rematch with Tyson didn't make sense, i doubt it would have made the same kind of money as the first fight because it was clear to every Tom **** and Harry that Tyson was shot.

So you are throwing a guy in named Byrd even though Lewis wanted and planned on fighting BOTH klitchkos and Tyson ...though he was past his prime?

it doesn't matter how old you are, half of, if not more you say is always false or out of tune...I actually remember EVERY fight because I study them, and have a better perception of whats now to then....

More or less what I think. He reckoned Vitali was nothing scary and that he'd blow right through him. I seriously think that if he'd known what he knew at the end of the fight, he would not have taken Vits on such a short camp and would rather have postponed for a proper camp. But, that's what happens when you get arrogant ;)

how could there have been a rematch if vitali had been left out there for round 7 and 8 with an eye injury that would end his career if left out.

Lewis was ready to retire, he simply wasn't as dedicated as before which is why he lost to Rahman and why he wasn't in the best shape against Vitali. The Vitali fight made him realise he couldn't just show up and expect to win because there will always be a fighters like Vitali or Rahman ready to knock him off the throne.

Had he really feared Vitali and wanted to continue he would have just ducked Vitali and fought anyone else, it's not like Lewis didn't have options.

According to Steward he told Lewis that Vitali deserved a rematch and Lewis agreed but his future wife Violet Chang basically gave Lewis an ultimatum to quit or they were over, Lewis went with his heart and retired.

I can understand the wifes concern for the hubby's health and safety after what she saw in that Vitali match.

I agree for the future Mrs Lewis it must have been a shock to see him struggle so much. When Lewis lost previously it was something that came out of the blue where one shot suddenly ended it, with Vitali he took a beating for a few rounds, that's not something Violet would have liked seeing.

based on her husband being the same age or more as every HW chamop inhistory apart from ezzard charles retiring yes.

in other words lewis did the norm and in style, retiring after beating one of the better fighters of the next decade, and to expect more would be crazy.

but vitali didnt, he fought bums to elongate his title run.
