After stopping Wepner in 1970 Liston said
"I hope some promoter can get me Jerry Quarry next "
If Sonny hadn't passed away and faced Quarry in 1970 /71 , what's the result ?
Liston to far gone or one more good victory for him ?

Liston was creaking by this time. A good counter-puncher like Quarry would have done to Liston what he did to Foster and Lyle.

Would have been a good name on Quarry s record , even though Sonny had seen better days .

Considering that he was old enough and unhealthy enough to straight up and die .... I'm guessing he could have lost to anyone at that stage !

I mean if you subscribe to certain theories he would've been like 46 by then

He wouldn't have done much else in fighting terms.

Quarry would probably have retired him, if he had got the fight.

There would have been other consequences however.

He would have become a brilliant fight commentator, and the softer element of his personality would have come to the forefront.

There would have been a bit of banter between him and Rocky Marciano (who took a different fight) after a lot of major fights.

Age would have mellowed him, and we would have seen a different side to his character!

Shame he didn’t live long enough to maybe fight the prime Frazier in the late 60s. Joe would have crushed him.

It’s amazing how things work out isn’t it? His career was winding down, there wasn’t really anywhere for Sonny to go in the division so it seems he was cut off right when there wasn’t anything more to come from him as fighter. I don’t think guys like Sonny belonged to the 1970s.

I think Whatever Sonny belonged to it was decided he was no longer of value to them.

It would have been a greater shame if he had of expired at an earlier time in his career when he still had something to offer within his own era.

In the end, The greatest pity is of not knowing what really happened to him. What really was going on. Something caught up with him. Sometimes with some people something always catches up with them in the end.

How would a prime Sonny do in the 70s?

I think he does very well

Lol I found that funny to be honest .
But of course I'm assuming he's well enough to actually not die !

Idk the first source I read was that he was born on January 1st 1924, I tend to believe my first instance but I don't really believe anything about this coz none of its true but if was that old his longevity was very good

I remember that thread .Yep , Liston was given literally no chance by most . Would have been an interesting fight , maybe Frazier s greatest fight pre FOTC ,or even perhaps a last ditch attempt by Liston , which sees him almost ko the young Joe !?
