The problem for Rocky Marciano would have been Ingo or Eddie Machen in 1958, in order to get at Floyd Patterson,
I see Rocky losing against Patterson if he challenged 1958. Rocky won in title fights because he knew he was totally and absolutely in peak physical/mental condition, if he had a doubt in those departments, then he would have had chink in his own air of invincibility, confidence was everything for Rocky. Rocky described his secret attempt to get back in shape from 4 min 28 in below clip. This content is protected
Prime for prime ends badly for Patterson. But a comeback against a prime Floyd? Def not. Patterson on a clear UD
Now imagine Rocky fighting an undefeated Eddie Machen in 1958, who was the no. 1 contender at the time or maybe running into a prime Sonny Liston, just released from prison after putting a police officer upside down in a dumpster in 1957.
Someone already said it, but Marciano thought about coming back against Johanson, and just couldn't summon the fire. So, if he did come back against Patterson, it would have been strictly monetary and he would have lost the zero.
Some great posts on this thread. Aside from the reasons already stated, Rocky simply had no reason to fight by 1958. He was, by the standards of the day, a very wealthy man and due to his fame and huge popularity, never had to pay for a hotel room, a meal, a ticket to an event.
Well if Rocky had decided to comeback that would tell me he was at least 80% of the fighter he had once been. That is more than enough to best Patterson. Floyd was fast but not that elusive and his chin won't hold up. As long as Marciano didn't forget how to punch he wins by stoppage. Probably multipleknockdowns. It does depend on alot of unknown factors. How much Rocky has left. If he shot then forget it, that would be Floyd only route to victory.
