A bit of a fun question ..if Rocky hadn't died ,What would his reaction be to Larry Holmes s out burst after losing to Spinks? The infamous ''couldn't carry my Jockstrap "" quote ?Does he .. Get up and lamp him one ? Laugh ? Challenge him to a computer fight ? Other ?
I think that he had a bit more restraint than that, but I also think that the incident might not have happened if he had been present. He would probably have reigned his brother in a bit more, and Holmes would have showed more restraint in his presence.
Marciano wouldn't have been mouthing off like his brother who had no business shouting the odds and goading Holmes at the post fight conference just after he had lost .Rocky had fasr too much class for that kind of behaviour. The actual quote is "if you want to get technical about it, Marciano couldn't carry my jock strap",and its true imo Holmes was miles in front of Rocky for boxing ability. I'm sure he wouldn't have pointed that out if the classless brother hadn't been trying to take over the conference and glorying in Larry's defeat. Larry never got his dues as champ and he felt he was robbed against Spinks, bad time to be taking the **** out of him. It's fortunate the conference wasn't held in a car-park else Larry might have launched himself off an auto onto his tormentor as he did against that other jerk Trevor Berbick!
without intending to sound rude, just being honest, marciano would have said form some alzheimers ward "i wuld have whupped im!" RIP Rocky
Larry was a funny guy because he was always looking for the respect the boxingpublic was reluctant to give him. I actually found him more entertaining than most.
Its a matter of opinion, Holmes is my number 7 heavyweight ,Marciano does not make my top ten.Since neither fought at any other weight I find there is no basis to rank either of them in myp 4p list. The only heavyweight I could conceivably make a place for p4p is Ali.
If Larry wanted respect he should have faced the best opponents available rather than ducking Dokes Tubbs Thomas etc.
If Marciano had been around he might have pointed out that he was undisputed while Holmes wasn't and that he consistently faced the best available opposition while Holmes didn't
Marciano was all class and a gentleman outside of the ring, he wouldn't have talked trash That being said, Larry sounded ******ed in that interview and I would've loved to see Larry go 15 rounds with prime Marciano's freakish punching power and unmatched stamina
I remember being at a after fight party in Atlantic city for one of Larry Holmes fights & Joe Frazier walked in , Holmes was talking about Marvis Frazier and called the 10 fight Marvis a shrimp (Marvis was not there) Joe Frazier (who was thick & scary wide) went right for Larry (who had a few beers) Frazier was serious and Larry said" Not you Joe!!", Not you Joe !" Holmes was tall long arms but Frazier was more impressive, strong, thick neck, wide head. Joe was serious
