If Marciano Was 1. Black?2. Not Unbeaten?

If Marciano were white: some people would rate him lower; some people would rate him higher; a lot of people wouldn't differ. Hard to say how it would average out, my guess is that being white mildly-to-moderately helps Rocky's repute.

If Marciano lost an early professional contest: It would hurt him substantially in some peoples eyes; it would matter little or naught to many; with a few people, who think Rocky's blown up over his 49-0 record, it might even help Rocky's repute. On the whole, loosin an early fight would hurt Rocky's repute a bit, and more than it should.

 

It just means that Douglas could have done even better than he did, which was at least very good.

The question in Douglas vs Marchegiano was not about comparing resumes, it was a strict h2h question.
Regarding resumes, Douglas' biggest win eclipses everything Rocco did since Rocco would not have been able to replicate it, not against a 1996/7 Tyson either, not even against the sedated Tyson that Lewis got.

Those who think he is over rated don't think so because he was white, any more than those who over rate him do so solely because he wasn't black. My issue is with those that " claim " he easily beats every Heavyweight champion from his retirement to the present day.

Believing whatever you like is one thing, but expecting others to be stupid enough to believe it also is another thing altogether.

 

He'd be rated differently by some and the same by others, depending on the opinions/predujices of whom you ask.

On a tangent, one thing I've always felt about Marciano is that he was likely much harder to fight in the ring than he looked from outside, if you get my meaning.

If Marciano was 6'1", black, 210 lbs and muscular with a listed 84" wingspan span, perhaps served some time, and beat the same size/level of opposition he would be the H2H GOAT!
