If Marciano was a crude boxer, how come he outpointed Ezzard Charles over 15?

    Good post. :good

Still, Charles was past his best when he fought Marciano.

I wouldn't go that far.

to be fair, he did keep backing up the claim by posting footage of Charles KOing Satterfield. Was it you ? :D

Well, Charles best is said be as a Light Heavyweight Contender, outgunning similar sized greats like Burley and Moore. So saying he's "past his best" may very well be true but in the age of Tyson and Roy Jones nosedives, phrases like that take on a different meaning and we see baseless and exaggerated discredits to not only Marciano's win but earlier in this thread, Charles entire run at heavyweight.

Past best or not, Charles was in fact a more successful heavyweight due to better opportunties and he still took his fair share of impressive scalps in impressive fashion, Walcott II is about as great a win as you can get in any division. However, he was certianly less consistent after the Walcott loss, fighting down to and looking sloppy against the sliding Layne and Bivins but great against the ranked Satterfield and Wallace. The first Rocky fight is certainly one of his best performances at Heavyweight and most writers at the time felt the same way. But than we have inconsistentecy rearing its ugly head and was unable to reach that level again for the rematch.

I would say Charles was slowly declining in the sense that he couldn't get up and perform at the super elite level night in, night out anymore. However, I take issue with the notion that he was "shot" and somehow a less capable fighter when he faced the lumbering layoff version of Joe Louis. Charles wouldn't look shot and incapable of past glory until after the Marciano matches, understandable as he took vicious back to back beatings that were no doubt the worse of his career in what he very well knew was his last opportunties at the title. He was no doubt left a mental and physical broken fighter, but financial troubles forced him to fight on as a gatekeeper.

Nay-Sayer is exactly what is name implies. A Nay-Sayer... I've rarely seen him say anything positive. And he's a notorious Marciano hater. Just ignore him and he will go away.
