You're just not in that category. Quite the opposite compared to several others here. I do cut a little slack to the oldest as they are often a product of their times and beating them down when they have few avenues of expression is not of particular interest. They'll have to really stumble ...

in contrast the "german" Nazis didn't necessarily hate on blacks like America did. the Nazis simply hated on Louis because he wasn't Aryan or Nazi and he was going up against their Adonis in Schmeling.

Was Britain any different? What was Britain's prevailing attitude toward blacks in the 30's,...the pre war period?

Now - take your example of concentration camps that ran for 3 years in the war, and multiply them by 100. 300 years. that's America. don't pretend they are on the same scale, America WAS WAY WORSE.

but yeah Nazis were completely hideous of course, that goes without saying. America were however the original daddy of the Nazis, and yet to this day it astounds me that they pretend they were some Nazi-killing hero country.

And plenty of people didn't, solely down to racism. I read that in some parts of America guys would cold **** Joe from the side just to brag that they had hit the Heavyweight champion of the world, only they were not that polite in their description of Louis.

In fact if my memory serves me well didn't Joe's friend Jesse Owens get arrested for beating up ( or pulling a knife ) on some lowlife who hit Joe when he wasn't looking?

 

Discounting everything else, and if we knew nothing about him,

if you said there was a fighter who was the only fighter to sweep his opposition at an unlimited weight,

who knocked out the longest reigning heavyweight and light-heavyweight champions of the 20th century,

with these two men voted the top heavyweight and top light-heavyweight or placed second in polls by the Boxing Writers of America, The AP, and The Ring Magazine near the end of the century,

and also KO'd a third fighter judged by some, including The Ring, as the best light-heavyweight of all time

who KO'd every rated or ever rated fighter he fought,

and as I said won them all,

would there really be any question that he would rate very close to the top?

What did Dempsey do that compares? He beat two ordinary heavyweight and light-heavyweight champions, and lost twice to the one outstanding fighter he fought.

Now I'm not saying that the nitpicking of Marciano's record doesn't raise some valid points, but that can be taken too far also.

So bottom line--I think he would be considered a very great fighter if he had been black.
