He kod him after beating him up and softening him for the kill with body shots its not like Layne was fresh at that point. Here is a primary source to back up my statement. http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...jdPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=jE4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=6265,2500157
"There is not mention of Marciano being "under the weather," in Skehan's biography of him." There is in Sullivan's. In explaining Marciano's "poor" performance, Sullivan writes this-- "Perhaps it was the effect of the long layoff, or overconfidence, or maybe it was the fact that he had received an injection of penicillin a week before the fight." Again somewhat guesswork, but this points to a rather severe infection having to be treated. As for the performance itself, I've watched the fight and Marciano totally dominates and gives Savold a bad beating. I've also read, and I don't know the facts about it, that Savold went to the hospital afterwards. If this is the evidence of a man not punching hard, it is not convincing.
It is a good source, but would the reporter actually know about Layne's teeth or was this an assumption? A "friend" might have more inside knowledge. And both could be true. A bridge might have been knocked out and other teeth sheared off. They are not mutually exclusive. On the bigger point, I'm sure Layne had taken punishment. He always did, but he certainly didn't look like he is about to go after coming off a one minute rest. He doesn't look wobbly at all. Boxers always get hit. And Layne came back from being down to stop Satterfield. It looks like a one-punch knockout to me.
Marciano's opponents all spoke of how hard he hit. I would imagine these people are all the better judges rather than revisionists 60 years after the fact. Not saying he is the hardest puncher ever, but obviously the man could crack with the best of them.
You beat be to the punch on our resident punching bag.:good Rocky wasn't 100% for the fight, and I believe was at a low weight of 184 pounds. McVey questions Marciano's one punch power. :rofl He should check the Layne, Matthews, Walcott or Louis filmed fights. Keep in mind most of Rocky's career is not on film.
I have a question for you. I have read some of the old threads, and you used to be the number one Marciano basher on this board, especially in disputes with SuzieQ Have you changed your mind? Or do you just enjoy taking an opposing view to stimulate disagreements?
Long layoff, he had fought 3 months earlier. I'm not saying Marciano wasn't a puncher, I'm saying his one punch power maybe overated, I don't know why I have to keep reiterating this?
Louis and Walcott were old men , Mathews was a light heavy does Frazier koing Foster mean he had top end one punch ko power? Marciano was 186lbs for Savold,2lbs more than he was in his previous fight 3 months earlier against Louis . Numb Nutsatsch All of Marciano's defences are on film.
What Mcvey doesn't realise it's the element of suprise that counts, most fighters are knocked out by the punch they don't see. Maybe Marciano's lack of speed affected his one shot knockout record. His one punch knockout of Walcott is the the best shot I've ever seen in a heavyweight title fight. I'd like to see your list of one punch knockout artists who were heavyweight champion, what does it matter anyway? Marciano got the job done and is still in the record books and will be for years to come.
You seem very fixated on creating a racial aspect to this conversation, venerable old time poster. Keep up the good work!
Rocky Marciano was a huge puncher plain and simple. Anybody that downplays his ability to render grown men unconscious just has an anti Marciano agenda.
the funny thing is the only so called puncher the prime Foreman fought was Ron Lyle and to me Lyle was no puncher YET HE HAD FOREMAN on his ass 2x and hurt several times (in fact the ref could have stopped it in Lyle's favor) after Lyle was dominated by Jerry Quarry he could not stop a worn and weathered Jimmy Ellis (who was just KO'd in 1 by Shavers) Lyle won a SD over Wendell Newton and decisions over Lou Baily,D12 Gregorio Peralta,Joe Bugner,SD STAN Ward, went distance with Bob Stallings,Oscar Bonavena, most of these men other than the 2 Argentinians were being stopped pretty often at the time so where is Lyle's power? I know the agenda minded like to make Lyle a Great puncher but the evidence is not there. Marciano fought big men but none in Foreman's league is one of the arguments put forward but none of these men fought a puncher in Marciano's league What would these big men do if hit by a puncher? forget size because size has been a variable that has changed with each era of modern EH advancement, in fact other than the Klitschko's and Lennox Lewis how many current heavyweights could not afford to lost 20-40lbs
