It isnt a question of him,"not having a punch" it's a question of him perhaps having an overated punch as far as being A ONE PUNCH KO ARTIST IS CONCERNED. Mathews was stopped by middleweight Eddie Booker dropped several times by ****ell dropped by 157lbs Jack Chase Mathews was a lightheavy who started as a middleweight ,since when has koing a lhvy qualified a heavyweight as a one punch ko artist?
Marciano kod two heavyweights of any stature with one punch ,one was 37 & 38 years old and had been stopped 4 times previously. That does not qualify him as a "brutal one punch ko artist" imo. Marciano was 32 when he faced the 40/42 years old Moore, if he was past it what was Moore?
Musto was 25 years old and had never been kod and Louis didn't ko him either.Walcott was 37 & 38 and had been stopped 4 times Archie Moore was even older yet he took it for 9 rounds ,and his chin wasn't anything special. There is not enough evidence to give Marciano the title of a one punch bomber imo.
Layne didn't display a sturdy chin against Satterfield he was down for a count of 8 in the first round .He just had a better chin than" Dresden Satterfield " whom he stopped in the 8th.
Tyson didn't KO anyone cold whilst champion, Holmes was still conscious I believe and Tyson got a free shot on him when his gloves got caught on the ropes.
A Contributory factor might be when a fighter perceives the threat level of his opponent not to be of the highest order... and after all that training..And Rocky was an extremely diligent trainer, it might be a case of going through the gears at a more steady pace, try a few techniques being practised in the gym, get a good rust shedder under the belt for more serious challenges ahead, coreespondingly opponents might shut up shop and be more defensive, and commit themselves to going the distence rather than trying to win, But against 50/50 opporsition they might go for the win and get caught ... I'm sure a lot of Marciano's opponents had Game Plans which involved not shipping early punishment and perhaps hoping to Cut Rocky or maybe he would Slow down a tad... Some Hope.
Exactly. Only such standards are applied to Marciano. Instead of appreciating what a devestating abnormality his one punch sparks of Walcott, Layne, and Matthews were, we get threads like this. Mcvey is teetering close to Hegrant territorty in regards to letting Maricano drive them insane. If a fighter scores multiple true one punch KOs over quality opponents, than my god, he's a one punch KO artist. End of discussion. Hell, they don't have to be quality. Nobody has a problem with Ruddock being given this distinction and his big KO was over a washed up Dokes.
Lots of guys survived satterfield. He hit hard but may have not been the best finisher He knocked out Spinks with one uppercut. That was a man who had never been down or beaten prior to facing Tyson.
Satterfield was all over him with clean punches, not many survived that. Layne was known for his durabilty and toughness prior to Marciano, the Satterfield fight was a big part of that. No. Spinks went to a knee and got up from the uppercut/body punch combination, beating the count. Tyson finished him after he got up.
Marciano WAS a dynamite hitter, with bags of stamina, stamina helping to make up for his poor accuracy.
This sums it up well. Goldman indeed did shorten up Rocky's stance, primarily to avoid Rocco from throwing those hail mary right hands and getting countered. After that, he seemed to be more an attrition puncher than a knockout puncher. Still hit hard obviously. For his size, I'd say he hit as hard as anyone under 200 lbs. How that would translate to the bigger, more robust modern heavyweights is hard to say. I don't think his punching power would carry over as well to big guys weighing 220+.
That uppercut put him away. who cares if he had already been previously knocked down from a body shot? He was out for the count after that uppercut to the chin landed.
