When did he start? I have long been a fan of Margarito and will continue to be one if he does not fight again but am pretty much resigned to the fact he tried to cheat atleast once. The question I have is when did he start? Is this something he tried to use in the Mosley fight alone? If not, how did trainers like Steward and Evangelista Cotto(who was held in very high regard at the time) miss it? If I had to pick a fight where Tony started cheating, I would say it was the Golden Johnson fight. Although I hate to admit that he might have been cheating during the Cotto fight, Tony's style changed pretty dramatically for the Johnson fight. Although never a student of the sweet science, Margarito used his limited defensive abilities before this fight. He was never known for his head movement but known by those who watched closely for his propensity for blocking punches with his gloves. Although he used this a little in the second Cintron and Cotto fight(noted by Steward), he was so offensive that his opportunities to pick off were limited. Is this an indicator that he started loading his gloves for the Johnson fight? Was he so disgusted with the loss to Williams that he sought extra help? Or is it merely the result of fighting an opponent with no punching power? Thoughts anyone? Bazooka, yours would carry some weight with me.
The only thing I can say is that there is evidence out there that proves his wraps were loaded prior to entering the fight with Mosley, However he did not use those in the fight with Mosley. The only evidence that we have to go on is from that fight, anything that happend prior to wasnt caught if there was something. What I do know is that the DA was quick to say they would be seeking a criminal case as soon as the test results are confirmed. However the DA obviously after seeing the results did not have enough evidence to support a criminal case, meaning the evidence that was discovered was so little that it would not hold up in a court of law. Does this mean that Margarito was telling the truth? No it doesnt mean Tonys telling the truth.. Does this mean Tony knew? No it doesnt mean Tony had any idea.... What it does mean is that there were some irregularities found in his wraps that are not consitant with the rules of the sport, regarding the "Concreate evidence" Not so, if there was he would be facing jail time not retirement. I dont beleive that He used them prior to, but thats my opinion, I dont think he ever used them or intended on using them, thats again is my opinon. What I can say is that there obviously was not enough evidence to convict and that has to count for something.
i had a lot going at home and missed a lot of the fallout from this. whats out there in the media is very vague. i've always wondered if it wasn't something designed to protect his hands more than damage an opponent. latino fighters are known for putting extra wraps on their hands for this reason. even manny steward believed this was the case right after the "inserts" were discovered. i also remember that tony was destroying guys very early in his career. its hard for me to imagine that it could go unnoticed for that many years
seems clear that he can't cheat anymore, so he got one more payday versus Pacquiao and will call it quits now... won't even give Cotto a chance for revenge, ...sad.
yep. i hadn't forgotten. i do believe there's something to my argument about his dramatic style change after the williams fight but it doesn't necessarily mean that its because he started cheating. i remember him saying that the loss to williams was due to his starting slow and that he was going to end that trend. its just funny that if you watch espn classic, you can see fights where tony was the boxer/puncher facing the slugger
I think he his gloves were loaded against Williams. Margarito seemed to get a little extra heavy handed in the latter rounds...after the plaster had dried and transforned into a cast.
hmmm. could be i suppose. i don't remember it that way but i haven't seen it in a long ime. i just remember williams dominating early and marg was then known as a slow starter. i thought williams tired out and marg was able to close the distance in the later rounds. it seems like tony was a little more economical and accurate(i'm not comparing him to mayweather to be sure) with his punches in those days
The reason why no charges were ever brought in this case is that Naazim snatched the wraps in question. Had they been confiscated by an officer of the athletic commission charges would have been filed. I actually know Capetillo and when I met him I imagined he was going to be a sneaky *******. However, he is not! The main reason why Margarito was successful is because of his conditioning and that was something that Capetillo instills in every fighter he trains. His fighters are in better shape in the second half of the fight is when they typically take over. Very few pro fighters can hang with Capetillo's training regimen. One thing I would like to add is that Margarito was over weight for the Mosley fight and came in dehydrated. I was told by a secondary trainer that Margarito did not want to train his abs for that fight.
ive cited the Golden Johnson fight he never gets early KO's and then he blasts tough vet Johnson in 1 but then in the second fight with Cintron he KO's him in the same amount of rounds that debunks it for me that and the commissions would never have let him get away with it so many times and other trainers or fighters would have said or noticed something
I seriously doubt that he was cheating for the cotto fight, the guys in vegas are real professional, not like those jackasses in california.
It doesn't matter how his career pans out after this. He knows Cotto with give him a really nice face lift. So, i'm sure there isn't going to be any rematch for this year between these two.
