    I said it.
I cant think of any other fighter worthy of this acclaim other than Maravilla.

i mean...pacquiao (if hes to beat margo) year would have been impressive, but considering clottey didnt really fight and margorito got knocked out by Mosley i wouldnt rate his wins over lets say
    Kelly Pavlik the 160lb champ
    and Paul Williams

If glen johnson got FOTY, then Martinez can follow suit and use it as a springboard to get bigger fights. pacquiao at 154 maybe?

    what are your thoughts?

If Sergio wins i cant think of anyone more deserving unless Direll fights and beats Ward.

Damn right! The first underdog FOTY since the Road Warrior in 2004!

If he does win he will be fighter of the year. They like to spread that award around. Pac already got 3, Mayweather 2 and only had one fight, and can't think of anyone else who's wins would better Pavlik and Williams.

It could be an interesting one this year as the normal contenders could be out of the running, wins over Clottey and Margaritto (if he wins) arent good enough for Pacman, Mayweather has only fought Mosley, Mosley has a loss and a draw so he's definately out, Wlad and Vitali have good wins this year but nothing spectacular.

So looking at it it should be between these:

    Sergio Martinez

An upset win over Kelly Pavlik, in which he won the WBC, WBO and Ring middleweight championships. A win over highly ranked Paul Williams would cap of a great year as well as avenging a disputed decision last time they fought.

    Juan Manuel Marquez

Coming back after a one sided defeat to Mayweather he has beaten Juan Diaz so far, although Diaz looks to be on the slide, Marquez won convinsingly and a win over Michael Katsidis would put him right in the mix, especially if it is a war.

    Juan Manuel Lopez

Has won two fights so far, beating a decent fighter in Steve Luevano who had only one defeat on his record, this also made Juanma a two weight world champ. His other win was a two round demolition of Bernabe Conception, although he was put on the canvas, These alone would not put him in contention but a big win over Rafa Marquez on top of these would, especially if he a)does it in style or b)does it in a war

    Andre Direll/Ward

Depending on who wins this match up (if it takes place this year) both guys have a good chance - Ward won a UD over Allan Green in which he dominated the fight, Direll beat undefeated KO artist Arthur Abram in a fight in which he put on his best display to date but the fight was marred by a DQ ending. A win for one over the other would put him in contention.

    Jean Pascal

Pascal has beaten undeated light heavy champ Chad Dawson to win the Ring belt, a fight he controlled and was also a slight uinderdog in, if he can beat future HOFer Bernard Hopkins in December he could have a chance also.

Other outside contenders are Miguel Cotto (depends if and who he fights at end of year), Yourikis Gamboa - solid year but not big enough names on record to win this year imo, Paul Williams - Cintron fight was a farc e, would have to destroy Martinez in style,

The hypocrisy on ESB never cease to amaze me. On an almost daily basis I read all about how Kelly Pavlik is a an over rated, over hyped, drunken bum, and Paul Williams is a china chinned chicken-****. Now you guys want to annoint Martinez "Fighter of the Year" for beating a "drunk" and a "chicken-****". You can't call Martinez a great fighter, and then call his opponents worthless. Boxing does not work that way, and you all know better.

If Martinez finishes the job with Williams, then yes, without a doubt he should be awarded the fighter of the year. The only threat posed to him is probably Pascal. Defeating the number light heavyweight (Dawson) and getting a win over a legendary Hopkins, may surpass what Martinez has done/will do

Man tons of people question Paul's chin. Especially at middleweight. Hopkins ruined Pavlik. Pavlik is a drunk. Pavlik doesn't know **** beyond a 1-2 and has the worst trainer in history. Williams got schooled by Quintana. Williams is scared of his own shadow. Williams has no defense. Blah-blah-****ing blah! Either Pavlik and Williams are world class fighters, or Martinez has zero good wins. Ya can't have it both ways.

Well -- sorry to put you on the receiving end of my venting. It just bugs the hell out of me that so many people are just oblivious to their own double standards and hypocrisy.

It's really only down to these 3 guys.

    1. Martinez - His award to lose, just beat Williams and he has it.
    2. Dirrell - Beat Ward and hope for Paul Williams to win.
    3. Pascal - Beat Hopkins and hope Martinez and Dirrell both lose.

Honorable mentions if the above 3 all lose and the following win their next fights.
JML, Wlad, Pac, Ward and Khan

What if a 46 year old BHop beats Pascal? In the running, or no?

Considering Dirrell probably won't be fighting again this year, you think his Oscar performance against Abraham is enough to see him in the top 3?

Despite how you feel of the ending of that fight he was still outclassing Abraham. Taking his 0 away and potentially taking Ward's too puts him in very good position.
