I think that he probably wouldn't have retired considering he still hasn't despite getting wrecked by Cotto.

Would he have fought GGG if he beat Cotto or would he have chased a Canelo fight?

Personally, I don't think he would have fought GGG.

Additionally, I don't think that fans would brand Martinez a ducker even if he didn't fight GGG.

Personally, I think the fans are being overly critical of Cotto.

Yeah. Martinez had already "ducked" him for some time and the same fans that are currently shitting all over Cotto were giving him a pass.

 

If that was the case he should have fought GGG instead of Cotto in the first place.

I understand that Martinez took the Cotto fight because that was where the money is. I wouldn't necessarily call that a duck. But Cotto wants Canelo because of the money and everyone is calling that a duck.

You think so? The way he talked **** before the fight made me think he definitely thought he could win. It could of course all be part of selling the fight. I just thought that Martinez thought he would win easily simply because he was the bigger man. I think he failed to realize that Cotto is in a skill level or two above him.

 

Why fight Cotto in a PPV fight fresh off an injury then?

True. I wasn't saying that Cotto was a bigger threat than GGG. I definitely think that GGG presented the bigger threat to Martinez. But the reason I said it was stupider is because fighting Cotto was a bigger stage. Had he won. He would be setting himself up for other much bigger PPV fights. That Cotto fight was time to cultivate all the fruits of his labor during his career and potentially become a PPV fighter and make some serious cash. If he was rusty he should have simply fought another one of his "mandatory" joke fights. Personally, I might agree with IntentionalButt and think that he knew it was over for him and was simply cashing out against Cotto.

 

First of all, Martinez must have known what condition he was in. If he knew he was shot to hell, he fooled the boxing fans and duped them out of their cash. Completely shameful, if that was the case.

Second you couldn't possibly believe that Cotto was a tune up fight. Thats preposterous.
