If Marvin Hagler never existed who would be the champ

Bunch of crap.everyone in BOLD, eh.There were plenty of contenders he didn't even face and enough he did beat to be a worthy challenger, just like of most of the Hagler era challengers.

He was not ahead of the rest of the pack, like say Dejesus in the mid-70s next to Duran.Not oven close imo.

 

Hamsho Hall of Fame? The Hall of Fame wants credibility. When they induct Hamsho there goes credibility. I could see Iran Barkley getting in by beating Hearns and having a war with Duran and winning 3 titles, but Hamsho?

Can't it be phrased "If Marvin Hagler had been five inches taller and thirty pounds heavier as an adult who would be the champ at 160..."?

 

I would have loved to see Hagler take on Spinks or Qawi. Many people see this as unheard of but the other 3 of his era Leonard,Hearns and Duran all moved up and took the chance. I think taking chance and losing is better than never trying it. Hagler had a 75 inch reach which might have done better against Spinks than people think.

 

Difference is that Leonard and Hearns were taking on Lalonde and Andries, both of whom were a long way removed from Spinks and Qawi. Leonard pulled a shameless fast one with the Lalonde fight and probably wouldn't have been in any mood to ever face Mike or Dwight. Just as Hearns probably wouldn't. Unless I'm mistaken and you mean them moving up to middle to take on Hagler as they did? In which case they all possessed bodily frames that were able to handle the extra weight without detriment, or even gain from it. Hagler, in comparison, already had as much weight packed into his frame as it could handle. Having to pack on another 15 or so pounds would have done him little good despite his reach IMO.

Hagler, like Carlos Monzon and unlike Bob Foster, knew his own limitations. Middleweight was perfect for him and he wouldn't have brought much to the table that Spinks or Qawi couldn't handle.

 

Alex Ramos, no way. Like Hearns, he showed promise but in reality couldnt deliver and had a chin that shattered like the finest of china. Check out that fight with Kinchen

 

hearns was going to fight Spinks had he beaten Hagler.

 

Alan Minter would have had two or three more succesful defences. One of the '4 kings' would have got him after that. Whichever one fought him first.

 

I've a sneaking feeling that Minter would have got the verdict against Hamsho,had Alan been champion at the time. That psychological boost of being champ would have done it.

 

Coulda woulda shoulda. That he didn't get past Hagler or Barkley is evidence enough to me that he didn't belong in a ring with Spinks, however brave or ambitious it might have been.

And Hagler was under no obligation to move up a division simply because Hearns, Leonard and Duran did. Like I said, their frames were designed to accommodate the extra weight whereas Hagler's wasn't. Plus he had plenty of very credible challengers available to him in his own division.

Maybe he could have emulated Dick Tiger in being able to bulk up where it didn't seem possible, but I'm not so sure. We all saw what happened to Tiger against Foster despite being able to outlast and outhustle Torres.

 

You are wrong. Anyony that followed the sport in the 70's and 80's can tell you of those that expected to beat Hamsho and ended up on the losing end. He was way ahead of the other contenders in the 80-84 years. And that IS (in BOLD) a fact.

 

oh please duran was fat at middleweight, he wasnt ripped. hagler was just scared of qawi and spinks. He even called out benitez and curry for ****s sakes, hes just someone that loves picking on the little boys.

 

He just wanted the big money fights towards the end of his reign, and the bigger names were Welters and junior middles.

 

I'm sure he would make no money fighting spinks.
