If max baer had taken the sport/training as seriously, what would be different?

I forget where I read it, but it was said that Max Baer trained so diligently that he could lift a showgirl in each arm and never spill his drink. And I've read that he didn't drink.

Yeah, his primary weakness relative to other successful heavies seems to be his overall lack of fundamental boxing skills more so than the lack of conditioning or physical sharpness we would expect if his problem were merely not taking training seriously.

Somewhat, but these guys were seriously deluded at times. One commissioner, a featherweight, banned Galento from boxing in his state because he thought he could beat Galento in a fight...

Baer had a pretty good jab.
He also had pretty good footwork, and solid fundamentals if he wanted to use them.

If you say Baer didn’t really understand combination punching, I have to ask, what the heck are you watching? He was a damn good combination puncher.

What he really lacked was the right psychology. Going into monster mode for Carnera, and then becoming a timid boy in front of Louis doesn’t show the kind of mental consistency you want in a dominant champion.

No, because he could have all the stamina in the world, but that isn't going to disguise is windmill-fair grounds haymakers you can see a mile away. To me his issue were more technical than him not being serious enough

Buddy is overlooked. Actually had a pretty good W/L record.

I agree he seemed like a powerful guy but like Max I think he lacked a mean streak, his last 2 fights were against Louis but he had some unexplained losses throughout his career at random times it seems

For the most part he was too nice for fighting and didn' want to end up killing another man, but I'll disagree with you about never showing a mean streak, he showed genuine anger and aggresion during some parts of the carnera fight, the king levinksy fight, as soon as king turned up the heat baer got pissed and knocked him out, and a very genuine hatred for schmeling, i think he showed apathy in the Louis and Braddock fights because his good hand was broken and he knew he couldn't win with them.
