after he killed frankie campbell, it was VERY difficult for him to light the spark. it came up against schmeling because of what schmeling represented to germany. and sadly, schmeling was against every thing that hitler represented. that is why hitler sent him to the eastern front.

I would understand your point about Schmeling except that in 33 the anti semitic purge was not even happening yet and Jews were still living in Germany freely Hitler was still unknown to most of the world even America until the 36 Olympics and even then he was not yet well known but had notoriety by the 38 Schmeling-Louis rematch.

As the story goes, Hitler let it be known through the Reich Ministry of Sports that he was very displeased at Schmeling's relationship with Joe Jacobs, his Jewish fight promoter, and wanted it terminated, but Schmeling refused to bow even to Hitler. During the war, Schmeling was drafted, where he served with the Luftwaffe and was trained as a paratrooper. He participated in the Battle of Crete in May 1941, where he was wounded in his right knee by mortar fire shrapnel during the first day of the battle. After recovering, he was dismissed from active service after being deemed medically unfit for duty because of his injury.

Max apparently said, when he was suffering what was to be a fatal heart attack, a line that Groucho Marx would have been proud of. He was in a hotel and felt unwell having had an episode earlier that day. He called down to reception and the receptionist asked if he needed to see the house doctor. Max said 'No. I need a people doctor' and died not long after. What a guy!

A difference in trainer could have had a impact on Max Baer if he was willing to put in the discipline and hard work. LHW Dennis Andries after he lost the title Thomas Hearns went to Detroit and trained under Emanuel Steward. Steward said he virtually had to start all over again. Andries went on to regain the title won 6 straight. Wouldn't have been beaten Louis but a properly trained Baer rejuvenated Baer would have been very dangerous.
