I honestly believe boxing will be better off. I want to see the best fight the best as much as anyone, but the myth around this event has destroyed the potential fight itself. When have you ever got excited about a hyped up ppv fight, and when the fight finally happened felt satisfied? At this point the fight hasnt even been signed yet and the years of hype around it has eclipse any fight build up I can remember in boxing history. If this fight happened in 2008-2009, it would have been as relevant as it has been made out to be, but thats no longer the case. Neither one of these men carry the sport and both are close to the end of their careers. If you go to a 5 star restaurant and the food is anything less than spectacular, your probably gonna be disappointing and not go back; maybe even wish you had just gone to 99s and saved some $. If this fight ever does come off, it will likely be more disappointing than satisfying. It will be difficult for boxing to get momentum back after expelling so much energy on this fight. Hopefully im wrong, and this fight will live up to the hype. I just dont see how.
Boxing will not be better off without these two ATGs fighting each other. The two best ducking each other will leave a far more sour after taste. De La Hoya-Mayweather was a letdown, De La Hoya-Trinidad was a let down, yet fans came back for more from those fighters, and went on to help make even bigger stars Pacquiao and Mayweather.
