If Mayweather tried that come forward approach against Pac like he did against SSM...

well, lets see. If he takes 16 months off and fights 12 hard rounds against a top boxer, I'll admit I'm wrong.

I think that Mosley's style the way it matches with Floyd was a big reason why Mosley looked like he lacked conditioning, combined with being in his late 30s and inactive for 16 months.

If Floyd does that against Pac he's just going to suffer the same fate as Josh Clottey did, except Clottey can absorb punishment way better then Floyd.

Hey philla and bewareofdawg, i'm gonna have to agree with philla here. bottom line, floyd may have made mosley tentative to throw punches but his style did not cause mosley to be gasping for air through a wide open mouth. i think overtraining and the layoff had alot to do with the performance. lets be real, the shane that fought margo would have given floyd a whole lot more problems than the version of shane that showed up.

I think you need to watch the fight again, Mosley landed a lot of heavy right hands early in that fight

The only thing that I'm going add to the whole "everyone looks gased against Floyd" arguement is that almost without fail every fighter that naturally fights with nervous or waisted energy (Hatton, Oscar, Mosley, Zab Judah) looked very gassed when they fought floyd. I'm only going to speculate as to why but this could be because of a lot of different unrelated reasons in each fighters case. Or it could be because floyd mayweather is a master of resting when a fighter is expending energy and then hitting/wrestling/attacking when they are trying to get a break or are least expecting it. I think the latter theory is the most acurate. Ricky Hatton has said something to this affect several times about the way mayweather fights. The good news for pac fans as far as I can see is that fighters that normally don't expend a bunch of energy against Floyd doing stupid things don't normally get gassed. Marquez was not gassed, Castillo (one of the coolest customers in the ring) was obviously not gassed, and Diego Corrales wasn't soo much gassed as he was ****ed-up. Pac used to be your typical anxious/crazy philipino in the ring, as demonstrated against Augie Sanchez. But as you can see by watching the last Marquez fight (and also the Cotto fight) Pac has become a patient cool customer in fights when things are not going his way. So I don't expect him to Gas out against Floyd. If he gasses out it will be more of a breaking down then gassing out.

Now to answer the thread starter's original question. Yes I think Floyd will fight this way (hands up, come forward). For anyone that doesn't think that Floyd wasn't giving the pacquiao style a dry run against Mosley please watch every single fight floyd has ever had against a south paw. The way Floyd fights a south paw is (unfortunently for him) the only predictable thing he does. Every fight against a south paw Floyd walks them down with his hands up. It is very impressive to watch. He is always very committed to finding his range with his left hook. He is soo committed to this that he pretty much disregards the rest of his offens until he can land this punch at regularity. Also he takes a lot of shots coming back the otherway durring this period as his defense for the straight left hand is to parry it and it usually takes him sometime to get the timing right. After he's got the left hook working he keeps coming forward and gets his straight right hand working. After that his combo of choice is the left hook that walks his opponent into a right hand. Sometimes he always adds a second left hook at the end. I agree that against manny floyd will probably need to be on his toes more then has been against other south paws. It will be interesting to see if he tries to add anything else to the formula in the first couple of rounds, in order to help him adjust to Manny's in and out style, or tendancy to attack from odd angles after being hit. I have a funny feeling that this fight is going to look a lot like a hybred of the Mosley/Mayweather fight and Marquez/Pacquiao II.

My last thought is that Manny gets a lot of flash knock-downs on fighters like the one he got on Maquez in their second fight and the first one he got against cotto. These tend to happen when manny moves to the side of his opponent and hits him from an angle that he is not balanced enough to absorb the blows from. When one weeds through the BS they realize that this is exactly what Nazeem Richardson was talking about when he was talking about "stepping on the dragons tail and sliding to the side". It will be interesting to see if Manny can pull this off but the more I think about it the more I get the feeling that we may very well see Floyd legitamently knocked down for the first time in his career if these two fighters ever meet.

Is that a 20/20 hindsight opinion, because going into the fight, and the first and second rounds, nobody knew Mosely was going to get gassed. It is also the general consensus in boxing that Mosley is a fighter who has more than decent power.

I don't know how people can compare Shane with Pac, 2 completely different fighters. Against Shane, Floyd could stand there, but, against Pac, that is another story.

If he stands in front of Pacquiao like he did with Mosley...he will be giving Pacquiao too many opportunities to catch him, and once Pacquiao gets into a rythym...it's very hard to stop him.

Although I do believe Mayweather can still be very offensive in this bout, I just don't think he can walk Pacquiao down. If he uses plenty of lateral movement, and tries to somehow keep Pacquiao off balance when Pacquiao is about to attack...I think he can adopt a very offensive gameplan.

Mayweather cannot have his back on the ropes for very long. For one, Pacquiao and Roach will be taking every opportunity possible to land as much and as hard as possible once Mayweather's back touches those ropes. And also, if this bout goes 12 rounds...and the judges see plenty of work from Pacquiao whenever Mayweather is against the ropes, decision will go to Pacquiao (Assuming it's a close bout).

great point about the ropes...that was also one of the things you could tell that they worked on for Mosley..staying off the ropes....there were number of times Floyd just threw a quick hook not really looking to land flush but enough to make Mosley cover up and also pivot away from the ropes.
