What would happen and why? Please guys explain your answer from a boxing stand point ... don't just say because Margarito is big ....
Floyd would do what Cotto did for the first five rounds, only for the full 12 - and not take as much punishment or gas. Wide UD. I would prefer Floyd to fight Cotto - he would win by stoppage and get a lot more credit for it.
it could go several ways, maybe floyd would pot shot to a decision by landing jabs&straights&then getting of range, maybe tony would catch him on the ropes&cause enough significant damage to the point where floyd cant keep him off&ends up being stopped, who knows
If the Margarito that fought Cotto showed up Mayweather would have a very tough fight (possibly the toughest of his career). However I would still expect him to escape with a decision. If the Margarito that fought Williams showed up, Mayweather would win comfortably.
Remember warrior that Floyd is comfortable on the ropes or in the corner and can counter effectively from different angles ...
I think that Mayweather is an underrated body puncher and would catch Margarito alot coming in ... whatever opening that Mayweather's opponents give him, he usually takes. So if a straight jab or straight right hand to the body is open, then Floyd would take it on the way in. The right hand of Floyd comes from so many different angles. Floyd's footwork will throw Margarito off balance ... when he throws on the move, he often swings wide and wild ... leaving him open for a counter. If they ever get close then Mayweather would tie him up and work on the inside ... like I said before he takes whatever you give him. Margarito could be walking into the straight punch to the body ... get used to it, possibly even block it ... then all of a sudden here comes a over hand right ... then in the blink of an eye ... Mayweather either ties up or gets out of the way. The fast twitch reflexes would also play a part ... because Margarito wouldn't be able to get rhythm and won't be able to anticipate Mayweather's movements. Once Margarito realizes that he's behind and needs a knockout ... he'll come to pressure recklessly and walk into something lethal ... i'm sure he'll get stopped. Margarito's face showed wear against Cotto in the latter rounds and with Mayweather accurracy he would show wear worse than that. Mayweather defense will also frustrate Margarito ... he has never faced a defense first fighter ... and if you can't find a target ... you get reckless trying to make something happen. Don't think that Margarito's chin can't be dented ... anyone's can ... especially if you get hit on the right spot. Mayweather's chin is better than Margarito's too.
There is no mystery to Floyds Game, he throws a straight right then moves off out of range to the side, then sets up again, watches his opponents feet and then throws another straight. His work relies off timing and accuracy. Margarito needs to use the jab effectively, whether or not he can is another question but the one thing that Margarito does which I think would work, is body work, I think his body work on fighters is underated. Mayweather would soak it up but it may slow his work down and he might find himself being tagged on the way out when he decides to spin off to the side, which is what happened a few times against Corley... But the obvious answer people would give in this thread is Mayweather winning comfortably, so its a pointless discussion until both meet in the ring... The only way we would find out is for the fight to be made now, whilst Margarito is fresh and not later when he might be shot worn...
You rarely see a Mayweather opponent thats as fresh as he is in the latter rounds. He usually turns it up a notch and seperates himself from his opponents (points wise) I think that Mayweather can stop Margarito based on what I just wrote. Down on points ... desperation ... recklessness ... lack of skill ... accumulation of punishment. Pressure and body punching isn't the way to beat Mayweather ... thats been the game plan of his opponents since his career started. Floyd takes punches to the body very good ... and he has a great chin ... Margarito is also very slow with his feet and doesn't cut off the ring that well ... that would be the difference between a fight between Castillo and a fight with Margarito.
To beat a guy like Margo you need to be like the following types of fighters. Fighter one Bigger than him able to outwork him and stand up to his attack like Paul Williams. Fighter two be a defensive counter-puncher like PBF use movement make Margo miss counter him and take little punishement in return. Margo can't deal with movement he wants you to stand and trade he's not effective if he has to move his feet they need to be set in order for him to get off. He will be constantly reseting against PBF. Cotto made Margo look amatuerish at times in their fight. PBF who is a master defensive counter-puncher will stick and move on Margo all night long and keep the fight in the center of the ring where he can beat Margo to the punch and control the distance he can also tie Margo up an get off one or two shots before Margo can react because of his superior handspeed, this is something Cotto should have done in their fight. If Margo worked his way inside with a good jab PBF would have more problems but he doesn't he comes in straight in often not working behind a jab. That's not going to work against PBF. Margo will be picked apart coming in like that with straight right hands and shots to his mid section. Margo relies on his opponents to get tired but that won't be the case when he's fighting someone with just as good or if not better stamina than he has. PBF won't fade like Cotto he doesn't know the word. Margo also is a slow starter and PBF will win the first 6 rounds before Margo is even in the fight. He will be frustrated by PBF's superior movement and handspeed. Margo will beg PBF to stand in trade but unlike Cotto PBF won't oblidge him. He'll just crack him with another straight right hand for the 200th time and be back out of range before Margo can do anything about it. Another assest PBF has is he can fight off the ropes unlike Cotto who caught hell there. He can counter Margo's slow looping shots that he'll see from a mile away all night long there or make him miss or block them. PBF won't lose to a wide open guy with slow handspeed no jab and plodding footwork. He's simply to good for that. Margo doesn't have one-shot KO power he looks to wear you down and he won't land enough on PBF for that to happen. PBF will land the cleaner harder shots. Margo will keep coming forward but not really landing anything of note the judges will see it as a boxing lesson. PBF by UD:deal
true, but against margarito there'd be dozens more punches coming at him from every conceivable angle, tony is an underrated inside fighter he throws great effective short punches&while not as effective as floyd is also a good counter puncher,i also see him having more success to the body than floyd would due to how he tucks his elbows in when hes on the inside.
