Thats what I was thinking ... if he got more clout beating Mosley and Cotto (for a 2nd time) then there should be no reason for him to fight anyone but Floyd Mayweather ... he would be the man to beat and considered the true welterweight champion.
He doesn't want to see his boy get beat again but this time it would be much worse. Since Williams is getting better and Margo has peaked and likely to be worse if a rematch occurs.:yep
Tony has options in the work he has done since the first Williams fight, he has fought and beat two world champions and scored three knock out wins since, and if you go back 2 years he has fought all of the top Welters in the divison except Mayweather. So rightfully the Mosley fight IMO is sort of a soft challenge for Tony he has the option to take an easier fight considering every thing he has done in the last two years. After the Cotto fight who knows what will happen, what I do know is that if Tony doesnt want to move up in weight he doesnt have to, Williams has fought plenty of fights at 160 especially earlier in his career, Williams is the man who decided to move up in weight, he took the rematch from himself. Paul could have easily just stayed at Welter weight and allowed the sanctioning bodies to officially rank him, he would have again become the mandotory to Margarito, and the fight would have no other choice but to happen. But its the choices that Pauls team made, they decided to go up in weight and fight there, if he comes back down in weight I see no reason the fight wont happen. Tony already fought him once, I am sure he will fight him again, But what I really beleive that Margarito is doing, Since Mayweather will not fight him, he has already beat Cotto and Clottey and Cintron, I think that Margarito is waiting it out a bit, Williams will be his "Mega Mayweather Type fight" so why not let that sizzle a bit? Why not allow Williams to rack up some good wins while making some quick cash before you cash in on the big one? I mean lets face it after all this is a business, why make a quick nickle when you can earn a slow dime???
Agreed! I dont agree with Willams taking the rematch from himself though. I wouldn't put my rematch in the hands of the sanctioning bodies..I don't know how much more this fight can be worth though...Tony was offered 4 million to fight Paul..If he waits he might get 5.8 million I guess...He' making 2.5 million to fight Shane and if he loses than his stock falls...If he would have fought Paul now and lost than he would have lost to someone he was "supposed" to lose to...Shane is old and out of his prime..if he loses to someone "old and out of there prime" than that could make the Cotto-Margarito fight much less appealing to the "casual fan" and therefore it wouldn't do the big numbers...Than again the "casual fan" probably doesn't know about Mosley-Margarito fighting...
I disagree with everything that you wrote ... if he fights Williams for 4m and loses ... he still has his name in that division and his win over Cotto to get him another big named opponent and possibly 2.5m. But if he loses to Shane then it doesn't matter if he beats Cotto 100 times he's not going to be able to get that type of money again. He's reached his peak money wise fighting against Paul Williams the first time ... and now that he declined that 4m, he might not be able to get that much money again.
But that is exactly the way he got his first fight with Margarito I am sure it would happen that way again had he waited it out. Williams didnt want that fight bad enough, I mean he could have stayed at Welter defended against Jennings or Cotto not sure who was in line. if it were against Cotto and had he won there, it would have been a huge seller to get the rematch going especially when you consider that they would be unifying as well. all I know is this, Paul Williams if he really wants to fight Tony he should put himself in a position that would demand that fight, by not moving up in weight to get re ranked at a higher weight class, he should have stayed his ass at 147 and got some work in. For some reason or the other I think Williams and his people had him move up in weight thinking there would be something better for him at 154, and honestly there isnt anything good for him at 154, the best he can do at a higher weight is Pavlik or AA, but I dont even think those fights will draw the kind of Money that a rematch with Margarito would. I honestly am lost in the way Paul Williams team is handeling his career, I have no idea what the **** they are thinking
PW doesn't wanna base his wle career around trying to fight AM. But he did wanna make that fight happen. If he & tema were smart, they would've given up the WBO belt, fought a tomato can and I'm 99.99% sure from there he would've been AM's mandatory.
Then why didnt he? Why didnt he fight that tomato can get his mandatory set and make the fight happen? Why did he simply chose to move up in weight? Truth is I beleive Paul is having trouble making the weight, his first fight with Quintana showed that, it was obvious, So I think Paul has simply moved up to avoid disaster, I mean lets be honest though he did beat Tony it was a close tuff fight. and you dont want to rematch a guy like Tony if your having trouble making the weight.
Good post. If he was smart, he uld've did that, and he would've most likely been preparing to fight AM within a few months, but instead he fought a tomato can like Kolle & a old, C level fighter at best like Verno. He hasn't made the smartest moves. Is he having trouble making weight, I believe he's been having trouble making weight for years, it cant be easy for a frame like that to make weight, but bottom line is he'll still make it. & even if did struggle to make weight, he'd still fight AM.
I agree with everything but I think Cotto/Floyd would be a good fight until around round 9 after Floyd has figured him out and starts to open up.
I don't think Margarito would slow down if he fought Floyd...the problem for Margo is even if Floyd slows down just a little bit...Floyd is still going to be to fast!
