If McCall was handily winning McCall Lewis II.... Would he of still started crying and appearing to have a breakdown? I just dont think he would of. I think it is Lewis's actions in the ring which caused it - a sort of mini version of Leonard Duran II. Or does anyone on here think McCall would have still given up even if he were winning?
If you knew what was going on in Mcalls personal life you would never think to put up a thread like this.
No doubt circumstances outside the ring contributed to his mindset. But if he was winning the fight, had maybe had Lewis hurt, would he have acted the same way. I dont think so.
I understand what your saying, crippet, and your probably right. But the truth is, in this fight, McCall was never gonna be ahead. He walked in the ring utterly unprepared to press and win a fight. Lewis did his job, landed hard shots, and McCall suffered a break down that was looming all night, the threat of which stopped him from really fighting.
This is somewhat true but even a green Lewis should have been able tobeat the limited Mcall. Lewis really was that bad defensively around this time The Rahman fight didn't surprise me. Lewis didn't take him seriously and Rahman was a capable fighter and could punch a bit.
Please enlighten us. I've never heard but figured there must have been other things going on besides Lewis beating him -- not like he was undefeated going in.
If Lewis was on the ball in that first McCall fight Oliver wouldn't have come close to winning. Lewis avenged both ko losses against men who had no business winning against him in the first place.
McCall was never going to be able to box with Lewis, but if he was winning he'd probably have kept it up, it's when your up against it you're mentally tested, he crumbled mentally because of his withdrawal combined with taking a pasting, not because he's mentally weak
McCall had literally no chance in the rematch (other than a small puncher's chance), so it's extremely difficult for me to imagine him "handily winning". Oliver had recently got out of rehab for his serious crack-addiction, & was under house-arrest. This meant he couldn't even get to the gym for preparation. He probably had weights & stuff in his house, but i doubt he had a boxing ring to do any sparring. I wonder if he had a treadmill for roadwork? Besides, even if McCall had been allowed to properly train in a gym, he was going up against a Peak Lewis who was way out of his league. To answer the strange question posed by the threadstarter, if McCall was somehow "handily winning", he would probably save his crying for after the fight, like he did when he quickly bowled over Lewis in '94.
McCall was a rugged slugger who put a bit of pressure on. He landed the right punch at the right time, capitalizing and a defensive mistake Lennox was consistently making. Thats it. McCall was inferior in every way, and had no chance of repeating the trick when Lewis fixed his errors. Rahman at least is somewhat live, being large, with boxing skills, and a really hard right hand.
