If Mexico was the only country with boxing in the world, who would the lineal heavyweight champs be?

Imagine that the talent pool of boxing solely consists of Mexican fighters. No other countries have ever competed.

Assume further that we can somehow avoid the butterfly effects from this. All the great Mexican fighters of the past still existed basically as they were in real life, except they only fought each other.

Who would have held the *heavyweight* lineal championship? Would the lineal champs have been the limited number of genuine heavies that Mexico produced over the course of its history, or would the lighter guys mostly control the title? And if the latter...which ones?

cross_trainer, I gotta tell ya, this is a really difficult question. I could not even come up with a quality scenario. The only thing I can say is that for those who fought at 175 or above, I will go with Yaqui Lopez as Mexico's best.

From 1991-2010, Saul Montana would have been Rocky Marciano, winning the light heavyweight and then heavyweight titles and holding them. I’m assuming there’s no cruiserweight division because, well, who is there to fight for it?

In 2011, Felipe Romero — with a 13-3-1 record (in our reality he had one loss to an American in Irvine, Calif., that wouldn’t have happened) pulls off the biggest upset in heavyweight boxing history in this alternate universe by topping the aging Montana via 12-round majority decision.

Apart from that, I’ve got nothing.

Sometime in the late 60s, I suppose Manuel Ramos would be seen as the lineal champion.

Strange question. If Mexico was the only nation that competed the heavyweight division would be dead.

Andy Ruiz Jr would be reigning currently and for some time prior you'd think.

Man, not very deep at all. After the Manuel Ramos 'era' came word out of Mexico in the late 70s that they had a Mexican heavy named Fernando Montes. He was OK locally but the minute he took a step up he was done like dinner. With no one else around he would probably hold it until Mauricio Villegas crawled into the picture in the early 80s. Another no-hoper.

It might be that the light heavyweight division is never invented under this thread's parameters, but I think there would always be the desire to create an "unlimitedweight" division.

They all have a deeper nefarious purpose, even if I'm not sure what it is.
