If Miguel Cotto was the super star, and favorite..why was the fight with Margarito held in Las Vegas and not at MSG, considering the above mentioned, and the fact that Cotto was more of a household name at that time, with a bigger following???

The answer is obvious. Even with a MSG sell out with over rpiced tickets (which a fight like Cotto-Marg would definatel generate), it still wouldnt match the income of a Las Vegas fight aka A Casino fight, Arum staged the fight where it would coup the most cash.

From a fans pov I wouldve preferred Madison Sq Garden.

How is that? Does Arum make any money off the Casino gambling gains for the night?

My knowledge of this in very anecdotle but a promoter would have to pay for the right to stage a fight at MSG, a Casino wouldnt charge Arum to have a big fight there as the extra custom a big fight brings to a casino is more than any site fee, alot more. If anything I would expect the Casinos to bid for the right to stage the fight...

Who and how people make money on closed circuit tv I havnt a clue but aparently it is very beneficial.

Was this the reason the Hatton-Mallinaggi fight was in Las Vegas and not England or MSG?

The promoters get 100% of the tickets they sell at most of the big casinos... the casino makes their money with the gambling and not with the ticketsales.

While MSG, Staple Center and other stadiums obviously need to make their profit out of ticket sales...

    Because boxing is stupid sometimes?

I hate how every fight with some semblance of relevance takes place in Las Vegas. Way to destroy every other market Bob.

"Based on Cotto's fights with Zab Judah and Mosley, he has established a good East Coast base on pay-per-view," Arum said. "We felt his base would be loyal and we needed a big West Coast presence. We think the great Mexican fans will come out for Margarito, so it made sense to do the fight in the West rather than the East. We couldn't do it in Las Vegas until they changed the rule on the gloves."

Arum also said he felt more East coast media would be willing to travel to Vegas, than there would be West coast media willing to travel to New York, which in turn would result in more promotion. And from the looks of it, he was right. Cotto-Margarito did 450K on PPV, while Cotto-Mosley did between 380-400k, and only 225k for the Judah fight. The only thing Arum was wrong about was the turn out for the fight. He expected it to sell out completely, but there was only 12,500 in attendance. Though I doubt it mattered considering the site fee and PPV revenue.

At the end of the day it was smart on Arum part to put the fight in Las Vegas, because the fight was a big hit on all scales.
