Tyson's punches were short and sharp to begin with, especially his left hook. I don't think it was as deadly as Frazier's but it was a crisp shot that he threw usually from slipping to his left, generating more power on the up rotation. Frazier mostly threw is left hook from a bob or weave.

His jab, hook, uppercut and straight right were textbook excellent, singly and in blazing combination. His thrust, torque and leverage placed him a class apart from the typical ponderous bruiser. Sonny Liston was correctly identified as a uniquely skilled powerpuncher and I believe Tyson was better.

Tyson preferred to explode midrange, but he could be annihilating up close with that tight left hook and right uppercut as Berbick and Tubbs discovered.

I am arguing that he would have done a lot more of his work on the inside as Dempsey did if he had stayed with his original trainers and continued to refine his craft.
