If you watched Tyson coming up through the ranks and saw how he performed up until the Spinks fight, he was really that good. To see how things changed in his career and how he performed after Spinks was a big let down in my opinion. Tyson was this guy with all the history in his head which the writers loved and respected, the D'Amato connection, and he was completely focused on fighting and becoming the greatest fighter in history. That all culminated with the Spinks fight and he was on his way to doing it. The speculation would have been far more positive given how good he was at that time. Everything after that was half assed in my opinion and really hurt his legacy for what it could have been.

Tyson was easily brain washed and his people had him believing he was on a mission to break all the records and he couldnt be denied. When Givens and King reprogrammed him to a different mindset he was never the same and it quickly showed in his performances and lifestyle. That was what was the letdown. He beat Ruddock, but Tyson didnt perform at his best in those fights. He showed a lot of guts, but he got hit a lot and fought down to a level he shouldnt have against Ruddock. Regaining the title against a guy he already beat and another guy who clearly didnt come to fight was nothing more than making him a two time champ in my opinion. Holyfield exposed him for what he realistically had been reduced to after prison.

Tyson legacy would be pretty good if he retired after Spinks. Not much to build on, but his dominance would make him high in the ranking, and that was after several title defenses.

TYson dominatd, there is no taking that away from him, he did clean out a division but after the spinks fight he was still young, it was only a 3 year career! If he retired then we would be left asking questions because nobodys career has run it course in 3 years. Its like Joe Louis after the max baer fight.
