if mma utilize small gloves for punching, should boxing consider smaller gloves too?

im sure there is much reason why the gloves has been increased to 10oz for welterweight fighters and above,

but after seeing slugfest's in mma with these thin fingerless gloves it make me remember about how it was scientifically proven that more padded gloves caused more councussions.

would it make sense to remain with 10oz gloves?

The padding on boxing gloves is mostly there to protect a fighter's hands. From what I've read, it does little to mitigate the damage caused when punches land to the head.

smaller gloves would be bad for the sport, there would be so many hand injuries it would not be funny, Look an average club fighter is so much better with strinking with there hands than a top MMA fighter, The power that a top fighter with power would do is scary and dangerous for the fighter who get hit and the other fighters hands.

I would say only if you could maintain the size of the glove in order to retain the defensive abilities of it..

Its a lot harder to block a fist in an MMA glove, and basically impossible to use it for blocking.

Trouble is, you need to have a material that will retain the overall size and blocking ability of a boxing glove, but decrease the weight. Otherwise, it would really change the sport. A lot more knockouts, but also defensive masters would probably become guys that rely purely on range, rather than doing things like using the ropes and blocking..

I think that would be the blessing of smaller gloves. I never liked the turtle defense as it has no relevance to real fighting. With smaller gloves defense comes down to head movement and footwork. Defense would become an art again.

It would change boxing but I would prefer that. Besides whos to say the boxing we know now is the real boxing? Boxing has changed every decade and there was a time when boxing used no gloves...

Boxing with no Gloves was very dull, Boxer would only try and land one punch at a time , instead of combination punching of fear of breaking there hands, also since there were no gloves it made for a very slow paced fight, which is why they had 20 round fights back then.

The Gloves actually make a punch more powerful for one. But the main reason they are on is to protect the hands.

In an average 12 round boxing match a fighter can throw between 500-1000 punches that connect, in a 5 round MMA fight you won't see more than 50 hit. So the stress on an MMA fighters hands is nothing compared to a pro boxer.

In a career or a boxer who has had 40 fights pro, say 75 amateur like alot of current world champs, along with sparring and training think about hom much stress there is on the hands. Take an MMA guy, infact take Randy Cotoure the biggest name in MMA history and hes only had what 25 fights (which hes lost 10 off wow hes amazing) and how much punching does he do in training and sparring, wouldnt even make 5000 in his life i guarentee.

Basicly if you take the gloves out of boxing a fighters career would last 10 fights and that would make boxing boring, just like MMA.

Also if you have any videos of "Slugfests" from MMA then please send me a link because i have never seen them, just 1 punch kos and wrestling.

NO, as boxing would become less exciting.
    1. Fights could always end early, thus preventing late round miraculous comebacks
    2. More Injuries, cuts, broken bones.
    3. Back and forth, toe 2 toe action Will not be possible like Barrera-Morales, Gatti-Ward,etc as fighters can be koed more easily.

fighters would not get KO more easialy, but fights would stop quicker from injury and cuts.

What someone has already said, the fighters in Mixed Martial Arts aren't anywhere near the level of Boxers as far as striking is concerned.

Could you imagine the likes of Hearns and Jackson with those gloves on?

anybody seen that one punch knockout Jackson got on Terry Norris. I've not seen anything like that.

Nah wouldnt work. MMA guys dont take punches to the head as much as boxers and if boxers used gloves so small their hands would be mangled after 12 rounds.

yeah, i agree they are mainly 1 punch kos and wrestling, but once and a while there are decent up and up punching that i would label as slugfests... not to the quality of a boxers slugfest but heavy leather no doubt.

Of course it does man. When punches are raining on you for 12 rounds with those tiny thin things you would not be able the rocognize the boxers anymore. That's suicide man. They did that in ancient Greece.
