Could Carlos Monzon have gotten a win over Robbo at middle, the early 50 s version?
    And in a rematch?

Quite feasible,Fergy. More than likely scenario, though, would have been a split series between the two.

I admire Carlos Monzon, it would be a good fight but Sugar Ray Robinson at his peak was very fast, and had great footwork. But to be realistic and fair I think that Robinson finds a way to win, he would have tied up Monzon's long arms, then target the body. It would go 15 but both fighters as experienced as both would battle down the stretch, Robinson scores a very close edge despite being hurt by the right hand counter of Monzon on several occasions during their bout. I believe that Robinson is the only great that could have taken the great Carlos Monzon in my opinion.

I;m thinking that version of Robinson decisions him, but it's close. Bit too much speed and durability. Ray knew how and when to flurry to offset the inexorable gradual walking down Monzon usually tried to impose on opponents. Don't see him being able to do that with Robinson.

SRR isn't going to have the height and reach he usually enjoyed over most , he will have a huge advantage in movement and speed
But Monzon will be setting the distance here, he was strong a huge middle with an engine
I got Monzon in a SD
SRR early rounds Monzon later rounds
    50-50 fight for me

Hey Buddy, I too think it would be close, but I am glad in this one if I am wrong. It is true that Robinson enjoyed big advantages in speed and height. But Monzon and his lifelong trainer Amilcar Brusa usually came up with a strategy when dealing with movers. Monzon and Robinson in my book were the two all time greats. Robinson won the title 5 times while Monzon retired as champion after 14 title defenses and 7 years as champion.

That was the thing about Sugar, wasn't it, Stevie.?
He d lose his title then pull back in the rematch
I see two close ones myself.
Monzon perhaps getting the first and the rematch a close decision for Sugar.

I'd back Monzon over Robinson at middleweight.
The peak Robinson at somewhere between 150 and 154lbs would be giving weight away and have no height advantage.
Robinson was a top tier banger especially with his left hook but Monzon is tough enough and can outbox Momzon over the long haul.
    Ditto in a return.

Imagine if these two plus Marvin Hagler had been around at the same time.

Robinson could have campaigned at 154lbs in another era, or stayed at Welter

I've always felt that this would be a very frustrating fight for Robinson. On paper, you can say SRR has it all over Monzon, (speed, footwork), but for some reason I see Monzon being a tough fight for him. At welter he was close to perfection, but at middle, (and that's where this fight is contested at), he was beatable.

If they fought twice, I see two frustrating fights for Robinson that go the distance. Somehow Monzon finds a way to peck his way to a win the first time, then maybe the 2nd time, it's possible Robinson could win a close decision in a rematch. Monzon would be awkward and not a guy for SRR to look good against.

He'd have been just as dominant at 154lbs as he was at 147 in my view.
