I think Fury hits harder than Ali, though not by much. As for Ali stopping Quarry, bare in mind Ali had a reach and height advantage, he was the much bigger man. He will be at a disadvantage against Wilder, so hitting him will be harder, for the aforementioned reasons, but also from the fact that there is more danger in getting close to Wilder.
I doubt he could get down to 175. 200 though, with day-before weigh in? Easy. So many of the 70's greats could fight at cruiser today though. Ali, Holmes, Norton, Frazier, etc. Almost makes you wonder why cruiser isn't a bigger division these days. It should be an exciting division full of 70's sized dudes.
Agree with most of your post, but Ali (and the Rest), would get down to L-HW with MONTHS between fights, just like all the other 200 plus pounds L-HWs of today. He/they would round out their last years at Cruiser.
Whether they would or could are different things. Anyone could go a division below where they are at their best if willing to shed muscle. Frazier could lose enough bodyfat & then weight drain to likely make LHW. But I dunno if he would be better at such low body fat. Holmes was a little heavier, & maybe early in his career he could do it, but again not likely for the best. Norton & Ali, with their combination of height & muscle mass would only benefit from LHW maybe early in their career. Of course, these guys may well not just be CW, but stay at HW & put on a bit of weight in muscle.
here yah, but in these conversations from past fighters, people always forget to factor in that we ALL Do the Same thing as Our CONTEMPORARIES... 200 lb past HWs wouldn't even 'think' of themselves HWs Today, No, they would Do Exactly the same as 'most' of their TODAY Contemporaries in & around 6'3" 200lb men and that is with 4 - 6 MONTHS between Fights, they would be L-HWs cum Cruisers.
Cowardly? Look how many punches Ali used to throw, a lot more than Fury did v Wlad and a lot more than were thrown in the first Fury v Wilder match-up and a lot more than AJ threw in his rematch v Ruiz or his title defense v Parker.
Shavers would have stopped everybody that Wilder stopped except Ortiz, however if he caught Ortiz flush he would take him out, his power was lethal, Ali`s chin was better than anybody Wilder knocked out.
