...of having more World Titles in More weight divisions if allowed to fight professionally?

Back when I first became fascinated by "The Sweet Science", it was amateur Boxing that first caught my attention. And I just remember how good the Cuba Amatuer Fighters were...Especially in the Olympics..27 Gold Medals since 1972 in spite of Boycotts in '84 & '88. Not to mention the large number of Cuban fighters with countless number of World Amateur Championships.

And sometimes I think about what if some of Cuba's great amateur Champions fought professionally...How good would they have been, And also, Imagine the Rivalry with some of the great Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters of years past...Julio Cesar Chavez, Ricardo Lopez, Marco Antonio Barerra, Erik Morales / Felix Trinidad, Wilfredo Vasquez, Hector Camacho and Wilfred Benitez...and much more.

Which brings me to the recent defections of Cuban fighters within the past 5 years. They have Bursted onto the Scene and already after only a handful of fights, ready to Claim Titles. Would this have happened in the 70's, 80's, 90's, Unfortunately...WE'LL NEVER KNOW!!!

But IMO...The Answer is YES!!! Cubans would probably have more World Titles in more Weight Divisions than fighters from Mexico and Puerto Rico. But Damn...Would have been great to watch!!!

But as a Boxing Fan...I am glad to see more Cuban get an opportunity to fight Professionally.

Here is a short list of some of Cuba's Great Amateur Fighters:

If Mexico's or Puerto Rico's best fighters weren't allowed to have gone pro, they too could have eventually picked up multiple gold medals eventually.

If Cuba would have a political sytem like Mexico or Puerto Rico, why should't they be successful in producing world class pro fighters? What would Mexico or Puerto Rica have in advance over Cuba then?

They still would have a large number of naturally gifted athletes who seem to love boxing like the mexicans or ricans.

I don't think they would surpass those two countries, but they would be on the same level.

They just wouldn't be as successful in the amateurs as they have been in their best days as a communist country. Just look at eastern Germany and how many medals they produced in their time as the GDR.

No. If not for the politics of Cuba, they wouldn't have such a developed amateur system that consistently churns out such good boxers. They'd still be good, but if communism fell in Cuba, after about 15 years you'd see Cuba's influence in boxing drop a bit. Since it's a very popular sport there, it would still have more champions in proportion to its population, like Puerto Rico or Guyana.

It is in part because of the "politics of Cuba" that they've had so many good amateur boxers!

The government of Cuba is the only reason they have so many boxers. Boxing has always been a sport of the poor people. Why? Because most people having other choices dont choose to bang their heads against other guys.
