I haven't read the whole thread. But considering the opening post and the thread title, I think it's very possible, unfortunately we will never know. I do think that at the very list Cuba would be mentioned as much as Mexico and Puerto Rico :good

Well, I look at it like this. Suppose Cuba was a territory like Puerto Rico. While I think it would have many more boxers coming out and performing, I don't think they would surpass because Cuba's politics allow for an extremely strong and well ran amateur program, maybe intially they will spit out a ton of stars but after the effects of the nationalized amateur program wear away so will the number of world class boxers.

i think cuba's amateurs have an advantage over say Americans because top American fighters turn pro at 20 when they are really still green. A 28 year old Cuban fighter in his prime really has no business losing to a 19 year old kid who hasn't even got his man strength yet.

Its not so much about politics, but its about history and how celebrated these young men are when they win titles. They're not forced to go to boxing clubs in Cuba, they go there willingly, hell.. most families don't allow their kids to box over there. Only the real hungry kids make the teams, forget about going in there half assed and making the olympic team.

So yes, a fair few of them would have the same success.

That mentality of yours is simply because you instantly associate " Cuban boxer with the amateurs " but that's not your fault. The great Cuban professional World Champs all were Champions 50 to 80 years ago, and most of you have never seen them. If it was'nt for Casamayor and Gomez, the boxing fans would think just like you, " the Cubans are only the best in the amateurs " but Casamayor and Gomez changed that quite a bit even though that they were just 2 World Champs that had to " defect Cuba " in order to come over here, just imagine if all the Cuban amateur stars on the Island decided to become pros, we are talking about possibly 80 to 150 professional contenders in everyweight class that are over there in the amateurs right now. But we have to wait until Cuba is totally free to see that. You should'nt think like that, the Cubans have all the right tools and talent to also be great professional Champions, they have just been trained in the " amateur system " since 1959. But with all the right training and right managements they can also win professional World Titles more than Mex and PR...Why? Because Boxing for the Cubans is a passion not a sport...:good

Just sit back and watch Gamboa, Rigondeaux, Lara and all the new wave of Cuban defectors grab World Titles and not only that but also " dominate "... Your mentality is about to take a " 360 " turn.

I asked you a question days ago and you haven't replied back. Here I go again, " why do you sometimes " defend the Cubans and other times bash them "? :huh

I have read many of your posts, you were really defending Felix Savon and Ariel Hernandez the other day, then on the other hand you completely flip out and all of the sudden the Cubans are nothing, they all suck... :huh

PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR VERY MYSTERIOUS PERSONALITY...

Zaryu, you seem to be a very " humble and sincere " Boricua boxing fan. My best regards to you for being that way!

It's very nice ( and very very rare ) to see a Boricua telling it like it is without letting his Nationality and emotions fool his senses...

Un abrazo para ti de un hermano Cubano !!! :good

i answered you already in the same thread you asked me, first of all im not flipping out and saying that cubans suck and are nothing, all im saying is that politics have helped cuba boxing, after the revolution sports became a priority in cuba and that's when cuba began winning all these gold medals.. it wasnt until munich 1972 that cuba won its first gold medal.. so a change in politics might help cuban boxers become professionals and win a few world titles now in the long run it might hurt them.. so we cant assume that they're going to take over boxing.. and lastly if you want to be a credible poster you shouldn't base your opinions just on race, ethnicity or where a fighter is from, im puertorrican and i love and support all puertorrican fighters but that doesn't mean every fighter from PR is better than everybody else and is going to win every fight.. I'm i supposed to defend cubans, puertorricans and all latin fighters all the time, why you have a problem with me having different opinions on different subjects just because the common denominator is cuban boxing or cuban boxers... do i have to love and defend all cuban boxers

I think you mean 180 turn.

If he did a 360 he'd be back to his original thought.
