If not Roach who would have been a better coach for Pacquiao?

Nazario took Pacquiao to San Francisco to look for a promoter. He introduced him to Murad first. Pacquiao was sleeping on floors.Very common I here stories of Filo boxers sleeping in garages here in Astraya.

Murad apparently had 3 trainers to select from Roach, Angelo Dundee,Slim Robinson. He chose Freddie because he was trained by Futch.Murad was a fan of Futch.

I also remember they stayed with the Donayri's when they were young broke and homeless in the US or A. Also Buboy was Donaire's big brother in the Philippines because Donaire's mom was a teacher in General Santos. To get a good grade Buboy would look after Donaire Jr.

Its Roach who convinced Pacquiao to part with Murad, but not because he was stealing money, but because he was making fights for Pacquiao that weren't in his best interest.
The first choice of an opponent that Murad had for Pacquiao after he beat MAB was Juan Manuel Marquez, and Roach was furious at Murad for that.
I remember Roach saying that in his opinion, Marquez was the best fighter in the division and that he'd be the last on his list for Pacquiao to fight, but instead, Murad was feeding Pacquiao the best fighter when he could fight other featherweights for the same pay.

I remember Roach distinctly saying, "Marquez is the best of the 3 Mexicans"...….and he said this before Pacquiao's first fight with Marquez.

Kudos to Freddie Roach, he knew even back then that Juan Manuel Marquez was a special fighter.

Great stuff. Going on memory here..Murad responded , If you don't have a stable of fighters, then you're not at the top. Murad said he didn't have a stable of greats for Showtime or HBO to give him top billing like Arum.

But if Pac was willing to be the guy to take fights on short notice (Ledwaba) he could guarantee tv time as the opener. He felt Pac style was so out there- the fans would bring him back- (he was right-now Arum takes notice), otherwise he'd had to haggle with other promoters ... (like that horrid AJ-Wilder fiasco IMO)

I do understand JMM was the best at that time to Roach. But back then, JMM wasn't the man to fans--to me either. He was high risk low reward with a countering style- MAB and Morales were the fans most sought after at 126.

I see his vision. If Pac is willing to take the fights no one else wants he forces the hands of other promoters. Otherwise Arum according to Murad was too smart & could price the fight out, if he cant control (both) fighters.
Saw another video where he went down the line-
Mosley wanted Pac & Pac wanted Mosley..Arum said "Pac dont know what he wants" A fight later Shane loses, now Arum signs it? A fight later Margarito an inhouse fighter loses to Shane, now Arum wants him..Murad cited these as examples of how Arum works. and that he couldn't get Pac top spot on HBO with that game. BUT if he beats the baddest mofos out there...fans will demand, that's why he went after JMM so early.

Interesting that Arum wanted that same fight with JMM, that Roach didn't...yet Roach steered Pac toward him anyways?

My point is that I tend to agree with Murad- Pac wanted to fight whoever, whenever, Roach wanted to milk it.

Had the judges got it right vs JMM I--- Pac should've either won 1st round TKO or correct adding would've given him the win over JMM and we would have never seen Pac JMM II, III or IV.

Again good points I don't disagree what you stated it is spot on, I just disagree with Roach, he never like Murad for some personal reason and forced Pac to Arum, and as PBF said look how much Arum made off Pac...

At the time Murad had Pacquiao, Arum had both Marquez and Morales.

When offering Marquez the Pacquiao rematch, Arum lowballed Marquez knowing that the fight he really wanted was Pacquiao for Morales.

…….but yeah, Murad wasn't in the same bargaining position that some of the other higher end promoters with a bigger stable of fighters were, which is the reason why Pacquiao was steered to Arum and Pacquiao gravitating to him based on Arum's dealings with Pacquiao during the Morales trilogy.
…….but no, once Pacquiao was signed with Arum, Arum had little interest in making a Pacquiao-Marquez rematch, in fact Marquez detached himself from Arum seeing as there was a conflict of interest in Arum having Morales and wanting to please him as he was his cash cow and Marquez only entered the picture when Morales wasn't in it.

Once Marquez left him, Arum had no interest in matching his now fighter Pacquiao with Marquez.
In fact, after Pacquiao's trilogy with Morales and 3 years had passed since Marquez' fight with Pacquiao, Delahoya and GBP staged Marquez vs MAB the winner to fight Pacquiao.
…….only Arum and team Pacquiao did not want to face the winner which was Marquez, so instead Arum negotiated with MAB who left GBP because GBP didn't fix it for him to be the winner of the Marquez fight.

After Pacqiuao beat MAB again, Arum was ready to move Pacquiao up to 135 lbs and forget Marquez altogether.
Only one problem with that, there was great media backlash as to why Arum would move Pacquiao up to 135 lbs when Paquiao still had business to take care of vs Marquez who at the time was considered by every boxing fan Pacquiao's biggest threat.
Even Phillipine scribes were writing articles of Pacquiao avoiding Marquez.
Then Roach comes up with, "Pacquiao cant make 130 lbs any longer"
Marquez counters with, "No problem, I'll fight Pacquiao at 135 lbs!"

…...if it were strictly up to Arum, the 2nd Marquez-Pacquiao fight would have never taken place, but Pacquiao didn't like hearing it from his own countrymen that he was avoiding Marquez.
Every ****ing avenue was tried by Arum and team Pacquiao to save face, they offered Marquez a pittance in hopes he would turn it down and they could say Marquez wasn't accepting of the terms and was pricing himself out.
……..only Marquez called a newsconference and exclaimed, "we're agreeing to every Arum nonsensical whim, I just want Pacquiao in the ring with me."
Marquez painted Arum and Pacquiao into a corner and the rest is ****ing history.
Two more robberies later, Marquez put the series of fights with Pacquiao to rest by dramatically putting him to sleep and poetically calling a halt to the series after the nonsense he had endured after every Pacquiao robbery.

Arum never wanted Marquez for Pacquiao and neither did Roach, but there was no escaping Marquez for Pacquiao without having egg on his face and the stigma of Pacquiao avoiding him and so after several fights, the Boxing God's made it right.

****ing promoters, they do it all the time to boxing fans, they don't match the best against the best.
Thank God Marquez found a way to maneuver himself and paint Arum into a corner that he had to face Marquez, or we would have never seen Pacquiao face a true great at or near his fighting prime.

Dude, your post is 95% junk. If Arum didn't want Pacquiao to fight Marquez, II, III, and IV wouldn't have happened. Period! Especially III and IV where Marquez was juiced to the gills and Pacquiao was at the peak of his popularity. Arum doesn't care what fans think (duh).

Just look at the way Floyd ducked Pacquiao. Floyd and Haymon didn't want the fight so it never happened for 5 years. Floyd finally wanted the fight in 2015 after it had been 3 years past KTFO6 and Floyd felt it was a safe enough fight to take.

I like Goosen and think he's highly under rated. Goosen works with what a fighter has, doesn't try to make him fit a mold. Manny would have done well in that scenario.

I think nobody does a great job with Pac other than Roach.
But to answer the question, maybe Abel Sanchez is a good choice.

If you didn't live the era, then you're not worth talking to about it.
You don't know squat about the going on's during that time from when Pacquiao first fought MAB and moving forward.
I was a boxing fan well before that era and know the intracacies of why things happened and didn't happen during that time frame.

Nacho would have suited him well. Punch with your opponent in smart combinations, good workrate.

Manny would have been scary good

I don't think he needs anyone. I remember when Hearns fought Virgil Hill in 1991, it didn't seem like he needed anyone and he didn't listen to his corner much. He had enough experience where he did what he knew he had to.. That was without Emanuel. but he did seem to know at that point what to do and Manny does also.

Pac & Freddie complemented each other. Reminded me of B Hop & Bouie Fisher They seemed so close the suddenly & tragically pparted way. I have my ownopinion of who caused their breakup
