Wilder had to show his determiniation he fired his trainer that didn't ley him go out in the second fight. His new corner would never have trown the towel. If at any point he wouldn't come of his stool and do a "no Mas" then he would be made fun off for years to come. I think his heart was also fueled by his hatred and dislike of Fury. This and the bulk he did burned through his energy after a couple of rounds there was nothing left.
Total stiffs put him down early in his career. If you taste canvas against guys like Dustin Nichols and Harold Sconiers, your chin is certainly not good. And this has been repeatedly confirmed, as Wilder fought total mediocrities - or overrated old men like Stiverne and Ortiz - before getting his fragile whiskers repeatedly exposed by Fury, who - whatever you say - has NEVER been known as a puncher. I stand by my remarks. The ONLY thing that kept Wilder's fragile mandible from being his undoing is incredible heart. He deserves respect for this, but it does NOT mean he takes a punch particularly well, as his history, and these fights, show he doesn't.
Floyd Mayweather Jr, the greatest fighter of his generation, when asked what the most important attributes are for a top level fighter, famously replied "Brain, Chin, Heart" Deontay Wilder NO Brain YES Chin YES Heart
Compare AJ and Wilder’s heart. AJ - gets up after another knock down only putting him to his knees by Ruiz, gets up by 7 count and stays in the corner to give up and pretends to complain when ref calls off the right. Wilder - furious at trainer for throwing in the towel and fires him whether you think it’s warranted or not. After last knock down on 3rd fight he even says he could have gotten up and continued even though we know he’d just get battered down even worse but shows you the difference between his heart vs AJ. Wilder’s heart - 10 AJ’s heart - 4
Chins & defenses can evolve. Wilder *definitely* avoided a lot of better competition, & should be critiqued for this & his maturity & decency. But you aso need to look at what & how many shots/fights a guy took, not just who put him down-& which times he got up & won. Lewis famously got Koed, once sparked out, by 2 less than ATGs. It should count against him, but they still were world class fighters with a HW punch. You can say that Nichols & Sconiers were not the equivalent, fair enough. But how often was he down or KOed over a decent length career? Was he a defensive master always avoiding blows? Wilder has a decent chin-admittedly not very good for a Wiorld Class boxer. Fury for most of his career did not train for power or sit down on his punches. He has for a we while now, & given his size & length, & just look at the evidence of him fighting Wilder close up... He absolutely now has at least decent power. Start a thread about it.
