if Pac loses to Hatton, I'll be the first to admit i overrated Pac

I don't really understand the logic at work here. Pacquiao is a former world flyweight champ whose true natural fighting weight is probably 126-130lbs, and yet he has bulked up to go for glory by fighting bigger men and securing bigger fights. If he loses to the undisputed best junior-welterweight in the world, how does that mean he is overrated? If he then loses to Marquez, perhaps you have a case, but one loss to Hatton does not mean that. He could still go back to 135 where I believe he would be more comfortable, and clean house and continue his superb career.

If Pac loses to Hatton, it does dent his legacy and I would drop him to 4th p4p behind JMM, B-Hop and Hatton, but to say he is overrated on the basis of this one loss would not be fair IMO.

(if Hopkins loses to Adamek, is he overrated? Of course not. It's far too knee-jerk to make that judgment based on one fight versus a bigger opponent)

How do you think the fight will transpire mate? Great avatar by the way, I had that a while back but it was only a small version.

One fight doesn't prove anything about anyone, IMO. You have to look at the wider context of the career, the opponent and the circumstances surrounding the fight.

I don't know...haven't thought about it yet, but it should be a contested fight, at least for a couple of rounds.

I'm not the person to ask, anyway...there are some people here who know these two fighters much better than I...dangerousity, for example...

...Pacquiao is my favourite figure in boxing bar none, right now...he is an inspirational figure as a person...so he transcends "the sport" for me. I have always supported Ricky and always wanted him to win, and I certainly don't want him to lose this time, but if anyone has to win, I would want that to be Pacquiao, for the legacy...

If Pacquiao is your favourite fighter bar none, and you have always supported Ricky, then why are you so readily deferential that Dangerousity knows more about them? I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or genuine. :D Dangerousity is a good poster, but he thinks Calzaghe would whip Monzon, so he is not an infallible font of wisdom by any means!

I think this is a bona fide 50-50 fight. My gut feeling is that Pacquiao's speed and stamina will see him overwhelm and stop Ricky late on, but I'm not at all confident in that prediction. If Ricky gets his tactics right, I can easily envisage him winning too. That's what makes this such a brilliant fight! :good

The oddsmakers and a majority of fans think Pacquiao is good enough to beat Hatton despite the fact that Pac is smaller, and despite the fact that Hatton is the best junior-lightweight in the world. Despite those things, most people still think that Pacquiao is good enough to win the fight.

If he loses, and it turns out that he isn't good enough to win the fight despite those things, then Pacquiao is not as good as most people thought he was.

And isn't the very definition of overrated: when someone is not as good as people thought he was?

The logic is there, its clear, its simple.

The odds don't perfectly mirror relative chances of winning, as you know...it's not how they work.

And it depends how highly you rate him in the first place, as I said before. If you think he's so good that he should be able to beat everyone 147 lbs and down, then yeah! But I don't think many people think he's so good that he should be seen as a clear favourite to beat Hatton...so...no...

    No.

I think he's so good that he should be seen as having a good chance of doing so, though...maybe 45% tops...

...so if he does end up beating him, he goes up even higher in my esteem.

    makes sense.

In your case, if Pac loses, you didn't overrate him.

But in my case (and i think most people) I think Pac will beat Hatton.

dangerousity is one of the best analysts here and he also happens to specialise in the lower weights more; I know more than him about the SMW division, though...now, he might not be a historian, like you, but in a head-to-head against you on current fights in a prediction league, he'd whip your arse, guaranteed!;)

Disagree? Then join my prediction league and prove me wrong!:bart

hmm says he will not be overrated...

Pacquiao: "I want to prove that I am the best!"
Even though he is P4P, not once has he stated he is the best...

very tough fight for pac. probably the biggest test since JMM I. Hatton is undisputed at 140. Pacs best wt probably is 126 and was never really tested at lightwt and welterwt. Nothing for pac to lose in this fight but everything to gain.
