no its not. not even close. floyd won legitimate titles against legitimate world class fighters even before he fought gatti. calzaghe called out jones and hopkins when there were no other legitimate contenders but, instead of going to the US and making those fights (like he is now and while they are spent), he let frank warren dictate his career. an when was the last time a frank warren fighter went to the US for a meaningful fight. mayweather might have cherry-picked to a point post-gatti, but he didn't before then. don't make comparisons like that if you dont know the history - and a lot of people don't seem to know what floyd achieved before he got the gatti fight - which was his first PPV fight.
I think your setting the bar alot higher for Pac vs Monzon. Monzon would not have been expected to jump to HW and beat a good HW there claiming a belt and he certainly would not been expected to jump up to LHW and beat an ATG p4p #1 boxer there. For example, would you expect Monzon to beat Ezzard CHarles or Archie Moore at LHW? Thats what Pac would be doing if he were to beat PBF. On top of that, between them they probably has beaten as many ATG's as each other, difference being Pac was the one coming up in weight to fight them whereas Monzon made them come up in weight.
A tad harsh IMO. Beating Mayweather alone I think puts him inside the top 15. If he were to beat Hatton it means he would become the ring magazine champion, which I think is an amazing achievement in itself considering where he started. A win over Hatton puts Pac in the safely top 25, possibly top 20
Hmmm. Maybe I am. Maybe I have became guilty of the olden-day fighter bias that I myself often campaign against. Yet the feeling persists that Monzon was a peerless, dominant champion in an era of only one champion, and in the pantheon of great fighters, surely the greatest middleweight of the last 80 years, the greatest of the televised era, should rank extremely highly?? As I said, if Pac beats Hatton and Mayweather he deserves consideration for that tier, with guys like Monzon, Leonard, Whitaker etc. If he beats Hatton and Mayweather, and retires as a SEVEN weight champion (a champ at fly and welter), then that key achievement would place him firmly above those guys and in the top ten, on the same sort of level as Duran.
