....Could Pacquiao end up playing the role De La Hoya played when he fought Pacquiao himself, and prove to be the launching pad to Lomachenko superstardom? There are similarities. Pacquiao is even older now than De La Hoya was when he fought Pacquiao, should the fight happen at 140, Loma will have to jump two weight classes and Pacquiao drop a weight he hasn't made in years. Who would win if this happens next?
I like your thesis, but that scenario kicks in at 135 for me. At 140, it's still possible Pac would still be very good but faded as opposed to being Oscar 2.0, and Loma would have to put on a lot of muscle in a short period of time.
Lomachenko is A RELATIVELY SMALL 130lber. Pac has power at 147 to knock big welterweights down and at least put on a beating...Pac is the considerably smaller man than anyone there. Pac at 140 would have very good power. Across the board he'll be far more dangerous and his punch resistance would be much better there, too, so we'd see a more aggressive Manny. Lomachenko would be an absolutely tiny 140lber. So despite Pac being semi-shot, he still offers a major threat that none of the welterweights had to face. Pac would be stupid to try and box Loma, though.
Loma does that then he is a boss, but let's be real Loma is taller than Pacman with a longer reach Pacman walks around 145 and Loma probably 140 it ain't much of a size difference at all and Loma must diet like a supermodel to stay at 140
Very interesting match up. I feel Manny will lose this one though. Even at 140 , Loma skill will prove to be enough to defeat Pac. Although I believe it will be a close fight...
No one beats Pacquiao at140, especially not to someone moving up to the LWW division. Pacquiao by KO, there is no way Lomachenko would be able to deal with the power and speed of Pacquiao at 140
Based on what ? Pacquiao has fought at 140 once , 8 years ago Saying Lomachenko would be fighting the same version of Pacquiao that fought Hatton back then is like saying the Oscar Pacquiao fought was the same as the De La Hoya that beat Chavez
Who said anything about Hatton? 140 is a more natural weight for Pacquiao, he will hit harder and be even faster at 140, and won't be massively outsized, I can't see anyone beating Manny at 140
If they were closer in weight and both prime this fight would be insane, the angles would be a nightmare to follow.
The DLH comparison really isn't that similar at all TBH. Oscar was a dead man walking at 147 lbs when he faced Manny. It was the first time he made the WW limit in 10 years- this was a guy who was campaigning at 154 lbs and even 160 lbs for several years prior to facing Pacman. Him trying to make 147 lbs in his mid 30's was disastrous and way too ambitious on his part. Pacman fighting Loma at 140 lbs would be a different story because that's arguably Manny's optimal weight at this juncture in his career. While I think Vasyly could have success in certain portions of the rounds, eventually he'll get caught flush with a shot from Manny. I can't imagine he'd be able to take his power. Loma hasn't fought anyone at LW or JWW before, so to jump up in class and face someone of Manny's ilk doesn't seem like a good idea for him at the moment.
De La Hoya hadn't made 147 in 7 and a half years since fighting Pacquiao It's been 7 and a half years since Pacquiao fought below Welterweight . Oscar only had two fights at Middleweight , and one he weighed 155 for in catchweight fight So its not really a ludicrous comparison
I didn't call it "ludicrous," I just said they weren't similar, and they really aren't. DLH had weigh-ins of 160 lbs vs Sturm and a 158 lb catchweight with Hopkins after he realized fighting full fledged 160 lbers was too much (most people thought he lost to Sturm.) Manny Pacquiao is not a WW. He beat Algieri 2 years ago for the WW title at a CW of 144 lbs. Manny weighed 143 lbs in that weigh in. Fast forward 2 years later against Vargas and he weighed 144 lbs on weigh in. Freddie stated a million times Manny doesn't have to have a strict diet making WW fights because he walks around at around 150 lbs. They believe his optimal weight is 140 lbs but have only been fighting at WW because the bigger names have been there for the last several years. Now if the fight was at 135 lbs, than I'd agree with the notion that there's similarities. But I don't think there's anyone who believes Manny at 140 lbs would be weight drained. His diet might have to be a little more stringent during training, but at his size and frame he wouldn't be missing any meals to make the 140 lb limit. One guy moved up 13 lbs to fight at MW and eventually made his way down to 147 lbs. The other guy fights continually at 144 lbs and would have to lose only 4 lbs to make JWW.
