I don't see BJ winning anyway but if GSP and Anderson win their next 2 fights then they should fight each other and I think this may be the way Dana is thinking too.
I don't think GSP will have his first fight at MW against Silva. More likely a tuneup or two, then Silva
Randy Couture got a match with Liddell for the interim title in his first match at light heavyweight Randy Couture got a title shot against Sylvia in his first match back at heavyweight BJ Penn got a title shot against Georges St. Pierre after spending 2007 and 2008 at lightweight Dana White green lit Anderson Silva getting a shot at GSP for the welterweight title despite Silva having never fought at the weight in the UFC. So on what basis would the UFC make GSP take interim fights at middleweight before facing Silva. Especially given that GSP has said he will not bounce back and forth between two weight classes. If GSP wanted a middleweight tuneup it would likely have happened all ready...he'll almost certainly get an instant title shot should he move to 185
I agree Will. If GSP wants to move up to fight Silva he will. He's been preparing for 185 for a while. In his last 2 fights he has had to cut from about 190!!! He trains with Rashad, Nate and numerous other big guys. He knows what a bigger man feels like. Weight hopping isn't too bad if you body can adjust, if it can't and you lose physical qualities then you've got to have the smarts and skills. At 170 GSP is a physical freak.
Yes and there's no guarantee that an Anderson fight would be at 185, it could well be a catch weight fight if GSP decides that he is unsure of making the jump to 185. No doubt the UFC would prefer it to be for a title and with GSP saying he won't come back down after moving up I would say middleweight is the most likely weight for the fight but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of the fight taking place in between 170 and 185.
Particularly his reach. That's such a crucial thing that most people don't realise. He has crazy long arms for a man of his size.
I can't see the UFC doing a catchweight. If GSP wins then the demand will be for him to move up and challenge for the title and if he loses then he won't have the excuse of Silva having the advantage of fighting at a weight he's to. I think after Shields the time has come for GSP to move - there's not really anything left for him to achieve at 170. If Fitch beats Penn then I can see the UFC using GSP to save them from Fitch as world champion. But there really isn't anything left for him.
who said anything about the UFC "making" GSP take interim fights at MW? I said GSP would likely take 1 tuneup fight, maybe 2. Never said anything about being made to do it.
I agree the UFC wouldn't want it but I get the sense GSP is a bit hesitant about the Silva fight when I hear him talk and he may be more open to the idea of a catch weight but then I guess in the UFC it's Dana and the organisation who gets what they want not the fighters.
Yea it's time for gsp to move up. If silva beats my boy vitor and beat gsp later on the year, i hope silva decides to go up and fight at 205. Since machida ain't no longer the champion. I would love to see silva fight rampage-shogun-tiago-evans etc
I have no interest in another PENN vs GSP fight. I would watch it, of course... but I really don't think there is a need.
The fire? GSP trains far more intensely than BJ, and clearly takes his job as a fighter more seriously, I don't see how you can say BJ has more "fire." GSP is challenging himself, by fighting the best fighters in his weight division; he is not a 185 fighter; I don't see how people can hold this against him. As for the original post, Fitch is probably the second best 170lb fighter in the world, so beating him would be a stong argument for a title fight for anybody. On the other hand, BJ has already had 2 shots at GSP, so a 3rd fight should only happen if there isn't another good option to fight GSP.
bj challenges himself against bigger fighter. GSP has dominated the welterweight division. If he beats shields then who's next? Condit is the only one i can think of and i woulld love to see condit fight alves or fitch first before he gets a shot @ gsp. Bj went up to fight gsp when he was the LW champion SIlva went up and fought couple of times @ 205 Why not gsp? do you really want to see gsp vs fitch-koscheck-penn-hughes rematch just sayin wanna see gsp fight some middleweights to see how he'll do.
