...now that Hoya is retired and Pac's luster would be presumably tarnished by such loss?

I know the Mancunian Hordes will lick and sniff Hatton's shadow, even when there's no sun shining, but would that be enough?

hmm says... No he won't be able to do it alone, and yes because of the amount of support and hype build he gets from the U.K. He appeals greatly in the U.K. but what about other boxing countries? I don't think he compares or has that it factor like DLH or Pac.... at least not yet........ maybe.

hmm says... I may add though.. he maybe able to revive boxing a bit if he does get a rematch with PBF or a fight with JMM or with someone big... but other than that....to an extent, he'll only carry boxing as long and as far his victories take him. (note: he wants to retire after 2-3 more fights I believe)

I disagree that Pac's star would somehow be diminished by losing to Hatton or vice versa. When the best fight the best, there is nothing wrong with losing. Gatti shows that you don't need to win every fight to have boxing fans on your side, just to be exciting and fight with heart.
As to whether Hatton can carry boxing on his own, maybe. A win over pac would be a big plus and would open the door to a lot of great fights, and with a huge traveling fan base I could imagine him selling out where ever he fights.

I get where you're coming from. Personally, i do think Hatton adds a new and fanatical fanbase in the UK and around Europe which is good for boxing. However, his style of boxing would not sit well with the purists and the Black American and Mexican School which particularly loved finesse and technique rather than the MMA-esque rough-and-tumble style of the Mancunian Hitman..

As others have said the fanbase in the USA is not massive and also Hatton is a 31 year old pressure fighter. Even if he keeps winning I don't think he's got any more than another 2 or 3 fights left after Pac.

You have some point there. But i tend to differ as i am of the opinion that IF and WHEN Packy loses, a lot of his fair-weather fans will jump off ship (and there are lots of 'em, trust me ;) ), and the rabidly outspoken haters would come out of the wood-work and trumpet their tiresome "i-told-you-so's," both of which could and would somehow affect the Pac lore...

indeed, but that 3 fights left can spread over the span of two years and that is an enough time before juanma lopez or ortiz takes over

but PBF had only laid down the blueprint on how to dominate him, it up for other fighters do replicate PBF tactics

If Hatton wins he cannot carry boxing. His loss to Mayweather will be there for awhile, and Floyd will not let him forget he lost to him. Hatton can just say he went up too high in weight which is the truth. I would love for Ricky to win, and then he can have some great fights at 140. It will be hard tommorow for Hatton, and Pacman looks confident. Both guys are great guys. The bad blood with the trainers I think is unnecessary. This is between Hatton and Pacman and not Mayweather and Roach.

this whole "take over oscar's role" rehortic is pretty useless with seasoned veteran fighters.

one of the reasons i believe oscar got so big, was the fact he was a star from like 19 years old? but unlike some other stars he actually managed to win belts and a lot of higher profile fights.

there are new "stars" every day, but they often turn out to be less than stellar or consistant at least.

the next big boxing star will have to be a sensation as an olympic gold medalist or at least VERY early in his career.

this way, as people get to know the next star they will be around for a long time like oscar was.

i mean, what's the point of giving this label to pacman, hatton, mayweather etc? they all will be retired in the near future! nope it's gotta be a guy snagging the limelight at the earliest opportunity and most importantly keep performing at a high level successfully.

EDIT: oscar had like 15 years to build up his fame, wealth etc. it didn't happen over night. well he was always famous, but im talking about the more later years when he was mega famous no matter what country you live in. no matter how sensational someone is at 30 years of year, most people who get on the bandwagon will most likely be seeing a declining fighter. and since they haven't been a fan for a decade, they will quickly lose interest in fighter who is showing signs of slowing down. of course, if this late star fights til he's 45 then yes and dominating everyone then yes, his appeal will draw the masses in.

How can people question Hatton carrying the sport?

He has 25,000 people following him over the Atlantic for this one. And thats because of his charisma. Hattons a very funny character whos also really down to earth. He also has this naked ambition, a sense of honesty about him. He doesnt throw dollar bills in peoples faces or tell people they dont know nothing about boxing. He calls himself Fatton and gets rat arsed on guiness lol. There couldnt be anyone better suited to represent the working man. He's a man of the people.

And now if he defeats a Pacquaio in an all-out war, then he will take the thrown and carry the sport on his shoulders. His charisma will spread world wide and his exciting style will slowly build him a following.

Personally i think Hatton will be brilliant for the boxing. When compared to the obnoxious personality of mayweather and a few before him, i cant think of a better ambassador for the sport.

    What you guys think?
