I don't think retiring at the right time assures a lower ranking. He still has to have more ATG guys on his resume who he beat than the guys he has. The best guys he fought were Toney,Hopkins,Hill and McCallum. Not bad although one was over the hill. One was green. Hill was on the downside yet Toney was his best win.

No....but he likely would be on many lists. To me he still wouldn't have the resume....but that would offset, by removing the question mark clouds that follow him today.

Same here. I still rate him quite highly though, either way. Just not that highly.

i think another good question to ask is how do you think jones will be ranked in 20 years or so? guys like robinson and charles had terrible losses and fought on too long but are still ranked at or near the top of lb for lb lists.

Contrary to popular belief, fighting past your prime actually can help you more than hurt you. Historians recognize the last appearance of the real Roy Jones, Jr. was that Ruiz fight.

Losing past ones' prime does not knock a fighter down the ladder on any reputable all-time list.

With that said, Jones simply isn't anywhere close to top 5 caliber. Neither his resume nor his ability was that high.

I don't like RJJ at all, and have been (unfairly) labled a hater in the past on here....but to say his ability was not high enough is way out there...

On ability he is on par w/ just about any great ever and could easily be argued that he might be the best (even though I disagree). I agree his resume alone discounts him from inclusion into a top 20...but in hypothetical talent alone type lists...I would be hard pressed to argue convincingly against him.....much as I hate to admit it!
