Many problems: RJJ punch resistance is questionable. His power at HW is not enough, Ruiz took his shots well, and remember that Tua violently KOed Ruiz. Tua and Tyson had similar power. And Ruiz fought one if his worst performance. Then you have Tyson who can take more punishment than Ruiz, be more active and with a better KO punch. Also RJJ was weighting just 193 I think. And he did not carry that weight so well. His feet and head movement were not as fast. He is the greatest LHW, he got this opportunist fight to make history, he did. Doesn't mean he would clean the HW division. Fankly, that's impossible. The 2000's Tyson would still KO Spinks in one round.
I don’t have any version of Roy beating a 90’s version of Mike. I think Spinks would definitely have gone more than a round with a 00’s version of Mike.
But he still gets KOed? Many experts think Spinks is better than Roy (I disagree with them but just slightly).
I don’t know. I’d have to give it some thought. There’s a lot to look at. Most people think that Spinks was intimidated in their fight. People think that he froze due to the aura around a prime version of Mike. The versions of Mike who fought in the 00’s was washed up. He was dangerous early, but he was only fighting for the cheques at that stage. His tank was empty. The Lewis fight was horrible. He only pushed for that fight because he needed it so badly for financial reasons. So there was no aura. Despite the blow out by Mike, Spinks proved that he was a very credible HW. I definitely don’t have a 00’s version of Mike blowing him out in a round. And Spinks wouldn’t have been intimidated by that slower, weaker version of Mike. So IMHO, Spinks would have had a real chance of beating him, especially if he could have gotten through the first few rounds.
I'm of the belief that the version of Spinks that fought Holmes would have given prime Tyson his toughest fight ever by a mile. Maybe he would have even gone the distance vs a prime Tyson. But when Spinks fought Tyson for whatever reason he seemed not ready, looked intimidated and it looked like he just froze and didn't even try to fight. Even a past-it Holmes who came out of retirement earlier that year to face Tyson lasted a couple of rounds with Tyson and was actually having some success before getting caught and stopped. Spinks beat a much better and more primed version of Holmes years earlier. A more confident and ready Spinks may still have been stopped by Tyson but he surely would have lasted a hell of a lot longer than he did that night. Spinks also for whatever reason didn't look in fighting shape when he fought Tyson. I mean by '88 Spinks was nowhere near the fighter he was fought Holmes years earlier. Maybe he just stopped training or didn't even try to put up a fight against Tyson thinking he had no chance. Maybe he just wanted one more payday but I think everybody was hugely disappointed in Spinks that night. We all wanted to see what would happen if the Jinx showed up and used his boxing movement and tried to outbox Tyson over 12 rounds. Many predicted going into that bout that with the round limit dropping to only 12 rounds would give Spinks a chance to go the distance, whereas going 15 vs Tyson might have been too many rounds. Exactly, and that's why I stated that RJJ would have easily beaten Tyson in 2003 had they fought. I was imaging the version of Tyson who fought Lewis. Lewis made easy work of Tyson it wasn't even competitive. HW RJJ from 2003 would have had the same kind of ease in beating that version of Tyson that Lewis did. RJJ vs Lewis in 2003 would have been the fight to make : to unify the division. That would have been awesome. But 2003 Tyson vs RJJ in 2003, RJJ makes easy work out of that washed up version of Tyson just like Lewis did.
