As you know he had the misfortune to come allong when there were a lot of verry good heavyweights around. How would you fancy his chances today?
He would be a champ he is better then Peter, Brewster and Valuev. He would beat Haye and stand a decent chance at beating Wlad he would not match up that well against Sultan, Gomez and Ruslan as they could counter him and he would lose to Vitali.
Wow, I thought I was overrating him. Those 70s slobs don't impress me as much as they do most. Lyle was tough, tougher than 90% of today's HW's but he was unskilled and his power was of the attrition type. Today, he would be a good (very good for the US) heavy who might catch a piece of the title but he would not be of the class of either K bro, Povetkin or probably even Chag, let alone that mythical match-up with Brewster.
While I agree that the 70s B teir are often overrated I see something in Lyle that is missing in the curent crop of heavyweights. I think that he would be clearly the best heavyweight not called Klitschko and might have a shot at beating them. I would certainly expect him to pick up part of the title.
All of the top-10 always has a chance of beating the champ. That's the nature of the HW division. The real problem with today's HW's is their management waits years to make fights that should happen asap. That, and too many belts, are the problems. If they would mix all of the top ten together on a consistent basis we would have more Brewster Liakovich type fights, although we may still have the occasional Klitschko-Ibragimov.
I don't think Lyle would have been a unified lineal champion, but I also don't agree with the claim that he'd be the comparable of Sam Peter.
Hi Bigjake, I agree with you. Ron Lyle was a very heavy handed puncher who KOED Earnie Shavers, Buster Mathis, Larry Middleton and Boone Kirkman. Due to his incarceration, Lyle got a late start in pro boxing and it should be remembered that five of his losses were to Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Jimmy Young (twice) and Jerry Quarry. Throw out the losses to Lynn Ball and Gerry Cooney. Lyle was WAY past his prime when he suffered those losses. In my opinion, Lyle's power would make him a threat in any era.
