Tarver took Clinton Woods's IBF title in April '08, the same Clinton Woods who beat Glen Johnson not long before. Casamayor stopped Michael Katsidis in March '08, Katsidis being the WBO interim champion with a 23-0(20) record. Roy Jones Jr's last win over a world top 10 ranked opponent was exactly FIVE YEARS ago. Yes, see we will.
Tarver wasn't a million miles off getting beat by Muriqi. The Woods that showed up on the night against Tarver would have been beaten easily by anyone in the Top 10 at 175 lbs. I think Jones will perform at least as well as Casamayor performed against Katsidis...but it's just a hunch, granted... ...just like people were wrong about Casamayor after he got beat by Santa Cruz, so people are wrong about Jones, who has looked better and better in his last couple of fights. This is the big one and he will be better prepared than for a long time. I think quite a few people will be pleasantly surprised. We'll see.
I am giving roy the benefit of the doubt for his losses. He has stated that he handled the move back down from heavyweight badly, he didnt take enough time coming back down in weight. (I dont think 100% this is the reasons for his losses but if he says it had a big impact I will give him the benefit of the doubt) In his last few fights he has stated he is feeling better and better. If you discard the loses and accept roy's claim that it was the aftermath of coming down in weight too soon then Calzaghe could be facing a better Jones (less shot) than the one that lost the fights 3-4 years ago. I think this is a tough fight for calzaghe, I think Jones is due to put in a good performance. I think Calzaghe wins and imo he could stop roy (tko) but I do believe its a tough fight.
well, jones is definately past it but still, he has some of those great abilites that made him the best fighter in the world. and remember calzaghe isnt exactly young himself. and calzaghe dosent posses the power to starch jones like johnson and tarver did. so its not that crazy to think jones can win.
Not so sure. Power is the last thing to go. Ask big George. Better yet, Ask Michael Moorer. Roy still has the power to seriously rock Joe. Does he have the timing and the skills to set up such a shot ? Probably not. But if I was Joe, I wouldn't put it to the test. Lessons for Joe to remember: Moorer: The fight was in the bag but he got careless. Liakiaovich: Won all but one round, got greedy, went for the KO and got KOd.
People always say that power is the last thing to go...it's true, but you also have to be able to pull the trigger. You might still have timing, precision and speed, and still not be able to pull the trigger. Heck, you might even have good reactions, generally, and still fail to pull the trigger when you really have to. (you might be fully OK physically, but if mentally/emotionally you are not all there)...Is Jones still all there, mentally/emotionally? Many people still think he's inhibited because the KO losses are still on his mind. ...it's always hard to pull the trigger against someone like Calzaghe, because he doesn't give you much time to do it in. Sure, Calzaghe should be careful, and he will be. :good
I think there must be some kind of drug going around in america at the moment. Jones is well shot. He's not even a little shot, he is barely capable of fighting! Roy jones lost to glen johnson in 2004, i know the claim is he has redeemed himself with beating trinidad, but he lost to johnson. He is past it, he has lost his speed and agilty, and now he will be ko'd again by calzaghe. This american pattern of repackaging fighters is good if they something left, BUT with the washed up it's simply avaricious witchcraft!
Not completely, but he's far from his best. I say the first half of the fight will be close and then I see Calzaghe pulling away during the second half of the fight. Comfortable decision win for Calzaghe.
