If Roy Jones had retired after Ruiz, would he have been a top 10 ATG?

i ranked him at 27...if he retired after the ruiz fight. he might move up to top 25 alongside marciano...both would be timeless as we would keep wondering who could have beaten them..

but still, it takes a lot of accomplishment to be in the top 20...he must dominate the way hagler does.. hagler is always a borderline top 20..his lost to leonard hurt his legacy..

durana and jofre are timeless...they are the best in their division and that timeliness increases their stock compared to other ATG...

Anyone that says no is fooling themselves...Jones would have been a sure fire top five atg...The legend would have grown. much in the way that other fighters has...

Yeah, but the fact remains that Ruiz was still a talentless palooka. Great fighters - even ones coming up from lower weights - SHOULD beat a guy like that.

I think you could have made a case for it. He did seem pretty untouchable up till that point.

We would not have seen him get KOd so he would have been percieved as one of the greatest ever, top 5

Roy Jones is stupid for giving Tarver a rematch...the 1st fight was the perfect way out for RJJ..."i'm slowing down, just lost alot of weight just to make this fight, and by body doesn't have it anymore"...all he had to say after he beat Tarver the 1st time and he goes down in the top 15 all-time....but he would get his due respect later in his life(like he's getting now because he seems 'human' now he's gotten KOed)...one of the most retarted moves in history is RJJ giving Tarver a rematch...

I'd pick Hopkins and Calzaghe to handily beat Ruiz just like Roy and Toney did.

So would I. There are a handful of Cruiserweights I would have picked at the time that he was WBA paper beltholder to beat him also.

Anyone that has skill and can move from the lower weights could beat Ruiz. He was horrible.

He was even worse when he was forced by the referee to fight by the rules. He looked clueless in the Jones fight and it was not because of Jones it was because the referee forced him to be a Boxer and he just could not do it.

I think some people are looking at this situation from hindsight in that they are factoring in Jones' "glass jaw" and his KO losses. Well, i'm talking about pre-Tarver. There was no issue with his jaw pre-Tarver. Actually, there was no issue with Roy Jones in anything outside of the fact that he could've fought a few more fighters.

I think some people can rightfully slide down RJ on their ATG due to his lack of fights when compared to other legends but i liken RJ's situation with guys like Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, and Lou Gerhig. Guys who dominated when they played but didn't have the longevity for one reason or another. But they are still viewed by history as truly one of the greats.

I think if RJ had retired after Ruiz, his legend would've only grown. There would've been no scenario where one could've envisioned him losing because he was never even close to defeat outside of the Griffin fight. He was just so dominant and brilliant that people's imagination about how good he was would've increased as time passed on.

Here is my thing with Roy:

he was hardly ever hit with a good shot in his prime but De Valle did knock him down. Now, I can't bash Roy for this as it is a credit to his skill that he was able to not get hit. But, on the same hand his opposition at the time and compared to other legit ATG's was not very good. Who knows what would have happened with his Chin had he took on all comers.

That is why I have a hard time comparing Roy with other ATG's because he never beat a unified, linear, or undisputed champion in his career like many other ATG's have. I have never said Roy did not have skill but his Chin leaves some questions to be desired. I do not think it is a coincidence that when he started to get hit on his Chin he started getting knocked out.
