If Schmelling got the decision in the Sharkey rematch

Max would have soldiered on as champion, maybe a defense vs Loughran, maybe a third bout with Sharkey..which would have been more decisive for Max...and the fight that I suggested,..staged in Nazi Germany, vs Max Baer. Max would have had to deal with the crowd,...top Nazis in attenence, perhaps Hitler, Goebbels, Goering & Himmler....and the question would be, would Baer fight with the hatred that he had for Schmeling & Nazism in general with that Jewish star on his trunks....notice I said "with that Jewish star on his trunks", not saying that Max was really Jewish....his would have been an electric, surreal event, even more so than Louis-Schmeling ll. And if Max clobbered Schmeling, would he have been able to leave Nazi Germany alive?

 

Max would never have held the fight in Germany.

The money in America would just have been too big.

 

Max was close to luring Tommy Farr to Germany for what would have been billed as the world heavyweight championship. In the twelfth hour Louis team swooped in and outbid Germany for Farr themselves.

I do not think Baer would have went to Germany for a title fight I do believe there was a possibility that Schmeling would have defended at least once in Germany. There would have been a lot of national pressure on him to do so.

 

Sharkey was winning the first fight with Schmeling two rounds to one or two zero with one round even entering the 4th. He clearly looks better in this match than in the rematch. However in Schmeling's defense he was a notorious slow starter and 4 rounds is just not large enough a sample size for me to say Sharkey would have won.

 

The referee for that fight was George Blake, here is an appraisal of his character.

Blake was known as a man of impeccable character. Some idea of his integrity is shown by a quote Sanstol gave to The Knockout magazine (April 1, 1933 issue), shortly after Blake agreed to take on the Norwegian boxer: " 'I told LaBarba that I knew Blake would not have anything to do with a fighter who wasn't clean and honest and that I had set that as my ideal ever since I met him in Paris [back in 1929],' said Pete.... 'I know Blake inquired into my habits, checked up everything I had done--my fights in Montreal and elsewhere--before he gave his answer. It was the happiest day of my life when he signed me to a contract. The blow was clearly illegal, and very forceful. The disqualification was merited. (Clear footage of the foul is available on YouTube) The rules have changed today, concerning low blows, repeated infractions will warrant a DQ. A single low blow, the fighter is given a rest period of up to five minutes to recover if he can't the bout will be declared to his opponent or rendered a NC.
Yes Schmeling was ridiculed in the media often derisively as the low blow champion. However his claim as champ was legitimized in the eyes of the media following his stoppage of Stribling.
