If shavers had managed ed to drop Ali, would he be rated as high as foreman in the 70 s?

Didn't Toney basically knock Holyfield out?

Toney basically teed off on Holyfield's head and body from the 4th round on and gave him a beating. Eventually Holyfield went down from sustained punishment in the ninth, highlighted by a beautiful left hook to the body, and Holyfield's corner stopped it.

On singular shots to the head, Ruiz had Holyfield more hurt than anyone else, which shows the unpredictable nature of the sport.

    No.

    Of course not.

A KD would not have put Shavers in the top 20.

Foreman is a solid top 10.

You know when someone starts a post with some bull**** like ' I'm not a fan of ___' or 'I wanted him to lose every time but .... ' you know that he's then gonna declare that fighter the greatest ever and then tell you everything that made him so great in detail. It's just one big lying con and its obvious that they are really that fighters biggest fan.

I agree with the ranking s and not suggesting for a minute that shavers becomes a atg purely on a kd. But the only thing that really stands out for foreman in the 70 s, is his pure destruction of frazier. Shavers had a few more losses on his record to but if he'd put Ali down he'd have achieved something only 2 men did in the 70 s. No small feat in its self, so I think it would have raised shavers just by that alone. But of course foreman destroyed frazier and that was certainly no easy fight.

Maybe Shavers should be rated a bit higher. Ferdie Pacheco left the Ali camp after the Shavers fight stating that Ali should never fight again. According to Ferdie, Ali won the decision but his kidneys lost the fight.

Good points made by all but what must also be remembered in comparing Foreman's and Shavers' performances against Ali is that Muhammad was three years older when he fought the latter than he was for the former. The Ali who fought Shavers was a lot slower and more ringworn than when he stopped George in Zaire. He still had that toughness, though,as has been said.

Definitely should have called it a day after that fight. It was only Ali s great chin that kept him up during some of those shavers punchers. But a high price to pay in the long term.

Shavers had stamina issues...he didn't carry his power into the later rounds...he didn't have the knack of coming up with the big punch when he needed to...he never won a fight past the 7th round...

if Shavers had knocked down Ali and still lost the fight it wouldn't have changed his standing. If he'd beaten the faded Ali, his standing would be elevated but with the asteric that he beat a way past his prime Ali, kind of like the asteric next to Leon Spinks' name.

The theme is unclear here. Is OP saying a Shavers knockdown of Ali would put Shavers above Foreman as a puncher, or overall standing. Simply scoring a knockdown, over a very faded Ali, would not put Shavers above Foreman, in overall standing. It could be argued that Shavers was a harder puncher than Foreman, whether or not he knocked down Ali. Remember, Foreman didn't knock Ali down either. Of course, Foreman faced a much better version of Ali than Shavers did.

The combination of Ali never being stopped and Shaver's being a terrible finisher against elite competiton makes it very unlikely Shaver's would have stopped Ali even if he had scored a knockdown.

If Ali was never stopped, it is unlikely a terrible finisher, which Shavers was, could stop him.

Sorry , I should have stated punching power. Not on resume, there's no way shavers can match George. But if he'd dropped even a past prime Ali, then that goes a long way to prove a point. After smokin knocked him down in Fotc, he would go the rest of his career with out a kd, unless you count wepner which is a bit dubious. So basically if he get a kd over Ali , does he go up a notch?

Every common opponent i know of considered Shavers the harder hitter and most fans go along with this overwhelming consensus.

If only these two had locked horns John. The battle of the big hitters. Foreman has to be favourite obviously, but just to see shavers land a good clean right on George! I predict a foreman lyle type very short rumble.
