Probably. What if these gentlemen would not have been the biggest in their time. Lennox Lewis.Muhemmed Ali, George Foreman, etc. Size does matter
There's no way to tell. Obviously if they were smaller, they would have to alter their fighting style. If the question is, would they be successful fighting the way they do without the size advantage, of course, the answer would be no. If Mike Tyson was 7 feet tall, I doubt he'd been to successful with his bobbing and weaving style. Perhaps a better question is how would they fair if a majority of their opponents were also 6'7.
With their current style, no. They would have to adapt, and make some significant changes. I have no doubts that Vitali would be successful. Wlad on the other hand clearly cannot take a punch and just can't stand being hit.
What if Ali or Tyson didn't have their speed, what if Foreman didn't have his power. Fighters develop their style based on their physical attributes so....
I don't think Vitali could make the changes needed, if he was an average sized HW. Wlad showed a little more agility, he could probably make the changes needed but yeah, his chin would get in the way.
What if vitali had rick hatton size arms ? and james toney hands and roy jones chin? Also if he had Pacs bad socks do you think he would be in parliment still ?
Vitali might well be good as he doesn't rely on using his height to not get hit and smothering small opponents up close like Wlad. Also Vitali has a chin and has proven he can at least contend with great fighters close to his own size. Wlad would be a complete bum getting KTFO all over the place.
In this era, they would not be as successful - but they would still be right in the mix as the entire division is completely horrible. In the past few eras, at that size, they wouldn't be successful at all. Bottom twenty - something like that. Today, at their actual size - if top level athletes of the same size were pursuing boxing - they would likely be at the bottom of the top twenty. Neither guy is anywhere close to being extraordinary compared to the skill set and innate talent in a number of large sized athletes today. They are larger, better conditioned, and good enough to win in this division in this era which is full of bums, old men, ex-cruisers, and other "C" level athletes. If someone sees extreme athletic ability - they simply aren't good athletically or live in an homogeneous land full of the generally unimpressive - in which case - by comparison - they honestly believe they are seeing greatness because they aren't exposed to any exceptionally talented athletes. To them .. the existence of better athlete talent is somewhat akin to imagining a unicorn.
Vitali may not be that athletic, but Wlad is cleary very gifted athletically. His speed, explosiveness and balance are on par with all the greats.
I disagree about his balance. You've seen him throw an uppercut right? But on paper, yes Wlad should be able to adapt because he is a good athlete, and he actually would have to learn how to throw a proper uppercut considering his decrease in size, but the fact remains that he has no chin and cannot take punches. He absolutely cannot stand getting hit. If he's smaller, he won't be able to employ his protect his chin at all costs style against every opponent.
