I suppose Stevenson is still considered Lineal and he is no longer the Ring champ, but this is about Tyson's legitimacy.

He retired 3x and hasn't fought in 2+ years

He's never been lineal. People conflate Ring and Lineal. Lineal is undisputed, the man who beat the man. Last one was Lewis. The K's never fully unified, mainly because they both had belts during much of their time. So Fury didn't get the lineal title because Wlad never had it.

    No.

He retired. And then continued to let everyone know he was retired for over a year. With a positive drug test to boot.

He should be stripped based on literally almost every requirement set by The Ring in it's own championship policy.

To view him as the lineal champion is to be going way out of your way to do so.

He needs to get fighting and stop milking the Wlad victory. Fight or STFU

This type of mindset kills me. Disecting the sport to that level takes away the fun of it all. You are saying that Lewis was the last HW champ? What has boxing been doing since then, exhibition fights? Is Vietnam the lineal champion of the world after beating the USA at war?

The only way to be lineal champ is to best the former lineal champ? What if he retires? The only way to then become lineal is to become undisputed? That logic makes no sense as they still didn't beat the former "man". There are far too many breaks along the way in almost every weight class to determine who is lineal that way without controversy.
But hey we all have our opinions, and the definition of lineal champ is certainly subjective. In my eyes, if lineal champ retires, the next guy to seperate himself from the pack is the new lineal champ. Not some vacant spot left open for decades.

In many ways I agree with you, I'd just substitute your "lineal" for my "dominant" champ.

Wlad and Vitali were both ATGs, I have them tied at #10 on my all time hw list. Wlad was the dominant champ when he lost to Fury, making Fury the dominant champ until he crazied it away.

But I still think there is value to being undisputed, "lineal" champ and I'd like to see all the belts unified in the division in the next 16 months.

Well they say you have to beat the man to be the man. So by that logic If all goes according to the odds then I’d like to see the winner of Joshua V Wilder take on a heavy bag filled with cocaine and pies for the true lineal championship.

The heavyweight division ceased being the man who beat the man when James Jefferies retired in 1905, nearly 100 years before Lewis came along.

OK, this is ridiculous. How could Tyson Fury EVER have been lineal champion, let alone now? The only way he could become a lineal champion is if he beats however wins in a tournament style shoot out between Parker, Fury and Wilder.

Klitschko was not the undisputed champion when Tyson Fury beat him, so all Tyson Fury became is a 3 belt holder who would have become undisputed if he beat Wilder.

Jeffries came back and got beat by Johnson. Marciano retiring is a better example. But then Patterson got the belt that was universally recognised as the world title belt and thus started a new lineage. It's harder now because there are a bunch of belts, but someone could do it today by getting them all.

As soon as a new lineage begins it is no longer the man who beat the man who beat the man. It ceased being that before Lewis came along.

(Side note: When Jefferies retired in 1905 Marvin Hart was installed as the lineal champion. He was followed by Tommy Burns and then Jack Johnson)
