If the shoulder roll is so great, why doesn't everyone use it?

:lol: I think Froch is a huge Mayweather fan. He references him in a lot of his interviews(including during training for Dirrell he said he was working on his defense Mayweather-style) and up until he lost he carried himself in a very toned down arrogant way.

But yes, Froch doing the shoulder roll is painful to see.

A boxers style should be solely shaped by his or her own natural ability, there is no 'one style beats all' in boxing.

Maybe I should qualify - you need great punch awareness and good reflexes help. Toney's fighting in a division of plodders.

thats bc tony mastered it when he was athletic, and then could execute it when he moved up as a second nature technique.

Simple, its not easy to use. It requires a degree of natural athleticism and reflexes to implement, because you have to actually react as the punch is thrown, and if you don't move your head in time you can get smashed on the top of the head which can disturb a fighters equilibrium.

It's fantastic when used corectly because you can protect your whole body, more so than a normal guard.

The high guard will always be the basic defence because its simple, anybody can do it hence its the first technique to be taught.

My only experance is from sparing.
I personaly like the shoulder roll or phily shell defense. I think the biggest problem is that it is rarely taught from the begining. If it was we would see it more and understand that it is a myth that you have to be a great athlete to use it. I am far from being a great or even good athlete. However I fell much safer using the philly shell than I do the tridtional hands up style.
Keep in mind that Mayweather's version is a little diffrent as he holds his left arm acrss his body rather than in front of it.
If you are doing it corectly your shoulder is lined up with your oppoents body. Making yourself less of a target. Your lead arm is in front of you much like a shelled. Your lead shoulder and back hand protect your head. You can slip and dodge punches just as easly as you can from the triditional hands up style. The phily shell has another advantage. One of the worst things you can do in avoiding punches is leaning back. As you are unstable and can not throw a good punch. Inthe Philly shell instead of leaning back you wind up sitting down and are in perfect poistion to throw a strong jab or stright or the one/two combonation.
The bigest weekness I see is that it may take some pop of of your leed jab. However no one expets you to stop anyone with a leed jab.
Also if you happen to be a counter puncher that decptively low arm may trick your oppoent to move in on you letting you catch him with either a quick jab or stright coming in.
People say it has weekness against southpaws. However all boxing stances are best used against other boxers who are the same handed as you. The shell dose have an advantage against southpaws as well. The stright right left jab combotion is ideal to use against southpaws. That combo is very easy to throw from the philly shell.

    Basically.

Here's a great example of the classic Philly Shell style, from the man himself, George Benton. One of the all time great Philly Middleweights and trainers, and among the most underrated technicians of all time. The man that gave Pernell Whitaker his style.

Benton is the shorter one. Nice KO as well.

The key to the beautiful style of the shoulder roll are your "ANGLES" The three most important things to have are your JAB,ANGLES,and FOOTWORK.The first thing you need to be taught when learning to box is your footwork along with your jab, using your jab offensively by stepping forward and using the jab defensively when stepping backwards. To get the angles on your opponent means to get your lead foot on the outside of your opponents lead foot. If you notice with Mayweather, when he hits guys with those 3 straight right hands, its because he's on an angle. By being on an angle, unless on the ropes, you'll never get hit by a bodyshot. When on an angle, they have less to hit, your back right or left foot(depending on your fight style) is behind you instead of on your side. I also notice with Money, whenever he's about to throw that straight right hand,he stands on the ball of his rightfoot, which if swung on will allow him to slip and counter the punch without moving out of firing range.Thats why hes a good counter puncher. And once your on your angle, the other fighter is limited with what he'll hit you with. also if your a right handed fighter like Floyd fighting a left handed fighter like Judah, once you get ur angle,he's open all day to straight right hands and left hooks. But all he'll be limited to are his right hands, and once he misses he's exposed to the left hooks. The key to the shoulder roll are ANGLES.

So instead of looking at Floyd's hands, his opponents need to keep an eye on his feet, bcuz once he steps on the ball of his right foot,he's about tho throw those vicious straight right hands. I was hoping so bad that he did that against Mosley he would of knocked him out.
