The rule was already in place, after the Firpo fight it was clarified and altered to,"the farthest neutral corner".
Dempsey took advantage of the lax application of the rules, which his opponents could also have done , but of course they had to knock him down first.

He didn't treat them evenly because, when Tunney scored a KD he immediately began a count although Tunney was standing over Dempsey.

Fair play Mac. The treatment does appear inequitable.

I’ll just say that on deeper analysis it appears Barry was about to begin tolling (he raised his arm) on the downed Tunney just as quickly as he did in round 8 but he stopped and then turned his attention to getting Dempsey back - probably based more on suspicion than anything else - and Dempsey in part vindicated that suspicion by actually moving closer to Tunney, standing behind Gene, positioned for another strike from behind.

Upon Tunney’s KD of Dempsey, Barry raised the arm likewise but he appeared to hesitate as he moved in to also get Tunney back - but, ultimately, Barry still tolled down for a count of a “1” count - which he ironically swept down AFTER Dempsey had already lifted off the deck.

IF Dempsey had been down for several seconds longer than he was and Tunney STILL hadn’t retreated, it’s interesting to wonder if Barry would or would not have then frozen his count at “1” until Gene had sufficiently retreated to a neutral corner.

No, you’re spot Swag on as was/is @mcvey . I couldn’t exactly recall if Barry tolled a count or not. Too lazy to check. I gambled. I lost.

Dempsey's fault totally. And it looked like Tunney wasn't concussed and could have gotten up.

He did count when Tunney went down, but stop the count the moment he notice Dempsey was not moving. The thing is Dempsey jump up so fast, Barry did not have time to react like he did when Tunney went down.
