If there had been no Frank Bruno , would Gary Mason have got a world title shot ?

I remember he lost his money in a variety of failed business ventures, including a clothing range and a jewelry shop if I remember. He was also a pundit on sky ( in the days when sky subscription got you to see plenty of decent fights) but he lost the job by swearing when he thought he was off camera I believe. He seemed a decent bloke.

I'm gonna have to watch it again. I remember it being a good scrap . Mason was slight favourite to win and I remember it was seen as a dangerous fight for Lewis. Mason had trouble with his eye fairly early on I seem to remember Lewis saying in his book and that caused Mason to go for the knockout but Lennox was bigger and stronger and found him easy to hit but extremely brave.

There was a lot of talk beforehand and the British press labored the point about Lewis being inexperienced, if I recall.

I wouldn't ever place a doubt over Mason's courage, though - his mettle was all too evident. The guy just went for it and threw whatever he could.

However, this somewhat feeds into my perspective of the bout, because Mason was relying on his guts, pretty much by the end of round-2 - to no avail. Lewis was just too good, even at that early stage in his professional career.

I watched the fight again, by the way.

Mason was doing pretty good for his limitations. He landed some good shots, and Lennox took it well.
Mason also showed cast iron chin when he was hit by Lewis' numerous punches. But that cut was really bad.

Lewis for me looked very raw in that fight, he has certainly improved his balance and defensive skills later in his career.

Mason wasn't as good ,did not have much boxing ability, or movement, nor power which was decent, but not awesome he lacked Bruno's jab too,he did have guts and a better chin.
