Why would anyone benefit from discrediting old time fighters and in particular,, marciano?
And if that bias/agenda exists why do Archie Moore, joe Louis, SRR and others still get so much credit for their skill and technique?
From which timepoint on are these agenda driven/biased posters supposedly satisfied with boxing skill/technique? 1960? 1970?

Regarding this board. Things have got better, but I recall arguing frequently in favor of Louis and Moore. Both were trashed pretty hard here and the Scene for years upon years.

The quality and availability of fights has increased considerably in the past decade, so I'm not sure if that changed people's perceptions so much as it just made my job easier lol

I recall way back the only Moore footage you could find on youtube was that damn Durrell fight, the Patterson KO, and highlights of Marciano beating him up.

GreatA..who used to post here did a great job of finding fights and getting them up and easily available..circa 2009.

In 2008 there was a renewed interest in Joe Louis, the HBO documentary and ESPN started airing a ton of his fights that previously had not been too common. His stock has steadily risen, and with footage being remastered, his hand speed and precision punching is finally being rightful recognized as among the best of all time by younger generations.

The Maricano agenda was just brutal here, up until the past two years. Regarding the benefits...I don't know, if HeGrant is still around, ask him how well his plan to remove Maricano from all time great lists worked out? Marciano's stock has rose considerably in the past few years.Recently RING poll pegged Rocky at #4, that might be highest he's ever placed on their polls in the past 4 decades.

I've been here for almost ten years, never changing aliases. Moore and Louis have always been held in the highest regard during this time. The worst I've seen said of Louis is that he would have trouble keeping up with a prime Ali.

Rocky is more of a controversial figure, in that case. But that is mostly in fantasy match-ups against modern SHWs.

Generally, I blame the production value of the fight films.
I'm optimistic that most people don't have a preconceived agenda.

And why are some of those being accused of having this agenda ,of a certain age themselves?

Or older members could just buy films off the numerous dealers that advertised in boxing publications. For example I purchased compilations on,Dempsey,Louis,Marciano,Johnson,Robinson and other individual fighters in the 60's.Films of Moore fighting Richards,Olson,Johnson, were available 50 years ago, along with those you mentioned.

HE Grant is still around, I've never heard or believed that he he had" a plan to remove Marciano from the all time great lists !" How would he go about that ? Was he on any panel of selectors? Did he have influence with boxing writers? H.E is an excellent poster whom I have argued against many times, though he is not a fan of several of my favourite fighters,I've never sensed he had an agenda in any of his posts or opinions.

If there are people doing that I don't get it. Why be on classic in the first place? It's our rich history of boxing that makes me prefer classic to general. Strange people if that's there intent.

If someone argues, that Marciano was lucky to come around at the time he did, and that he probably would be out of his depth, against some of the much bigger men that followed him, such as Liston, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Lewis, etc... is that necessarily an attempt to discredit him? Could it not be a serious poster expressing his honest opinion?

Or if you say, that prime Dempsey most likely wouldn't slay every champion that came after him - does that make you a "hater"? I don't think so!

There might be a minority with an agenda against old time fighters. I don't know. Either way, it's fairly obvious when an agenda-driven bias is being put forward.

I have certainly encountered a fanaticism of modern fighters, in the occasional post or three and, sometimes, this has led to attempts to downplay the accomplishments of past masters. Again, it seems obvious to me when such attempts are made.

In general, however, I find 'Classic' to be more an exchange of opinions, which have been well-formed over many years of watching boxing and reading up on boxing's history. I am often more interested in reading posts than responding to them; particularly those covering long time historical periods in the sport.

Even discussions around topics, in which I am relatively au fait, lead to useful insights. And, of course, there are certain boxers, individual fights and other events, which polarize opinion and will forever be debated.

    Marciano is one such figure.

I'm not sure I would suggest that The Rock is subject to a negative agenda but he is an enigma (particularly to Boxing's purists), whom I think some people try a little too hard to rationalize. Personally, I think Marciano's career, style and physical feats confound both sides of the arguments that often surround him.

I, for one, like the fact there are historical Boxing figures like Marciano in the debate.

I haven't been around here long and really haven't been serious in boxing more than 10 years but from my perspective it seems like its 50% casual fans and 50% boxing enthusiast that are against old time fighters.

I think one way to look at it is, just think of the younger generation and how most don't like old time cars or old time movies. They don't like them because their OLD!
