Agreed, one would assume that if Lennox signed, he then gets in the best shape possible & does what he always did in rematches.

Even if Lewis did go on to fight once more against Tyson or RJJ, so what? He had done everything he could and had an ATG career & he was at the end. He deserved an easier fight, plus would've made more $$$ than a VK rematch probably. Nothing wrong with that!

Can any of the anti-Lewis people here really say that he ever ducked anyone, before Vitali? He fought just about everyone that mattered, except maybe Wlad K?

    Yep he looked soft.

And Vitali was in awesome shape, at his absolute best, I've never seen him better. VK gave a monumental performance, you have to give him that much. Despite what I think of his abilities, Vitali was always in great shape & had ATG durability & toughness.

The tide of the fight was turning in Lewis favour iirc. Got to pick a motivated Lewis.

Didn't happen though, so an unmotivated Lewis would have lost.

I believe Lewis wanted the rematch as well, or at least felt he owed it to Klitschko due to his strong performance, but his wife was having none of it. As much as I'd have loved the fight for his legacy had he won (especially if he'd actually been able to out-box Klitschko), in terms of just looking out for him and his family, can you really blame his wife? He could retire on a high note after a great win against a hungry young lion, financially secure for life, with his health intact. Why risk it for one more fight, especially against such a dangerous opponent?

If Lewis signed for the rematch, he was coming in the best shape he could be. So we would see a vastly improved and motivated Lewis, vs maybe a slightly improved Vitali. You might say Vitali would improve as well, but from what we have seen of him, he has never shown to be much better than he was for the Lewis fight. Lewis would have won had the rematch taken place. Probably in a strategic boxing clinic!

Lewis didn't back out because he couldn't win. He backed out because he wasn't willing to go through the hell of a training camp, at his age, to get into winning shape. Lewis was one guy who actually did care about his legacy. Beating Vitali twice wouldn't add enough to it for it to be worth it for him.

Vitali MAY have the edge. At this point Lennox was out of love with boxing. He took the W and ran with it. Smart stuff!

I decided to watch this fight again myself and to score it, heading in I don't believe that VK deserved to be leading on anyone's card when it was stopped but lets see.

    Round 1
Sure VK barely takes it 10-9 VK well done by VK.

    Round 2
VK also takes this one, far from a 10-8 round however. So VK 20 LL 18

    Round 3
Solid 10-9 round for LL. Where on earth did the VK from rounds 1 and 2 go? VK 29 LL 28

    Round 4
Pretty sorry round. VK certainly didn't land anything. Begins with VK getting thrown on the floor by LL and then VK tries to kick LL from the floor which LL responds to with assisting VK with standing up. 10-9 LL. VK 38 LL 38

    Round 5
LL has his moments but can't really step on it. VK returns to his corner a bloody mess however. Just a 10-9 round for LL. LL 48 VK 47

    Round 6
Lewis lands some really good stuff. VK did absolutely nothing. Only way to score anything for VK would be in punches thrown or pittypats landed. LL 10-9

Final score LL 58 VK 56

The only reason that anyone would have for claiming something about VK being ahead on some card would be related to some anti British sentiment, white supremacism, pro eastern europeon sentiment or small dick syndrome.

Guy got out pointed, roughed the f up, cut and bloodied and stopped.

Then this piece of trash retired without giving Chisora a rematch, without fighting Deontay Wilder and without giving Tyson Fury his deserved title shot.

But yeah the white supremacists and their friends can just keep on believing that this fellow was ahead on some legitimate card or that he would have koed Lewis or that he deserved a rematch but still, it's just pathetic. This guy even lost to Chris Byrd. Listen to the post LL interview, all he says is true.

How far removed from the original are we talking? If even just a couple of years later we're now dealing with a quadragenarian Lennox while Vitali wouldn't have yet reached the halfway mark of his thirties. So not exactly a level playing field.

In late 2003 or anytime in 2004, however, you have to figure Lewis would train seriously and improve on the first performance accordingly. Considering the fat and complacent one-foot-out-the-door version of him took Klitschko life & death, the logical supposition is a repeat of that result.

    Which...

    of course...

    was...

Lewis roughed the f out of Vitaly, bloodied him up and was on his way to ko him in the first fight.

Ofcourse Vitali would have won the rematch just like Francois Botha and Shannon Briggs would have koed Lewis had he given them rematches.

This Vitali won, Vitali deserved a rematch, Vitali would have won if, Vitali would have won the rematch.... these ideas are rooted in white supremacy, small dick syndrome and god knows what other sort of nonsense. Be honest to yourselves, rewatch the fight, Lewis should have been ahead on any unbiased scorecard.
